Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Matriarch

Nicolás rose from the medical table, his shirt hanging open, his face turning into a mask of pure stone. The warmth that had filled his eyes moments before vanished, replaced by a terrifying, ancient coldness.
"Stay here," he told Sofía, his voice flat. "Do not open this door for anyone but me."
"Nicolás, what are you going to do?" Sofía asked, her heart squeezing with an emotion she was terrified to name. She cared for him. Despite his past, despite his world, she had fallen in love with the fierce protector beneath the armor. "She has armed men with her."
"They are inside my house," Nicolás said, picking up a secondary rifle from the bunker’s weapon rack and checking the magazine with a sharp, lethal click. "That means they are already dead."
He turned to her, his gaze softening for a single heartbeat. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing her jawline. "I will come back for you. For both of you."
He slipped out of the safe room, the steel door locking automatically behind him.
Sofía rushed to the monitors, her hands pressing against the glass screen. On the display, she watched Nicolás ascend through a secondary ventilation shaft, bypassing the main stairs completely. He emerged like a ghost behind the first guard in the hallway outside the study. Before the man could even turn, Nicolás neutralized him silently, taking his weapon.
Inside the study, Doña Leonor was pacing, her expensive heels clicking on the hardwood floor. "Hurry up!" she snapped at the Treviño mercenaries. "The military police will be here within twenty minutes if the local captain can't keep them paid off. Find the safe!"
"You won't find it, Mother."
Nicolás’s voice rang out from the double doors of the study.
The two remaining mercenaries spun around, raising their rifles, but Nicolás was faster. A double burst from his weapon dropped both men instantly. The heavy folders of stolen deeds flew from Leonor’s hands, scattering across the blood-stained floor like fallen leaves.
Leonor backed away, her face turning pale as she hit the edge of the massive mahogany desk. "Nicolás... wait. You don't understand. I did this for us! The Treviños offered a merger. We would be untouchable from Monterrey to the coast!"
"You poisoned my son," Nicolás said, his voice a low vibration that seemed to shake the very walls of the room. He advanced on her, his rifle lowered but his presence entirely lethal. "You tortured a ten-month-old child so you could play your corporate games."
"He is just a baby! He wouldn't remember it!" Leonor screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into frantic, ugly desperation. "Valeria was weak! She was going to take him away from us! I needed a reason to keep her here, to keep the Serrano money tied to our name! I am your mother, Nicolás! You wouldn't kill your own mother!"
Nicolás stopped a foot away from her. He looked down at the woman who had given him life, seeing nothing but a hollow, parasitic creature who had traded her soul for power.
"No," Nicolás said quietly. "I won't kill you. Death is too merciful for what you did to Mateo."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small digital recorder. It had been transmitting everything since she spoke into the bunker's intercom.
"The federal authorities have been building a case against the Treviño cartel for five years," Nicolás said. "And tonight, you just gave them a full confession of your conspiracy, your financial fraud, and your corporate espionage. Every asset you own in Switzerland, every piece of property in Spain, every peso to your name... is being frozen as of this exact moment."
Leonor gasped, her hands flying to her throat. "You... you would ruin me? You would put your own mother in a federal prison?"
"You aren't my mother," Nicolás said, turning his back on her. "You are just a criminal who hurt my son. Don Esteban!"
The elderly butler stepped out from the shadows of the corridor, holding a standard security radio. His uniform was torn, but his posture was proud. "Yes, Don Nicolás?"

"Hand Doña Leonor over to the federal commanders waiting at the bottom of the hill. Tell them the Velasco empire is fully cooperating with the investigation into the Treviño syndicate."
As Leonor was dragged away, screaming curses that echoed down the marble halls, Nicolás turned toward the hidden elevator. The battle was won, but the real challenge—the reconstruction of his life—was just beginning.
