Chapter 5 - Under the Same Roof

The corridors of the Velasco mansion, once a showcase of museum-quality art and pristine marble, had become a war zone. The air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and drywall dust.

Nicolás moved with lethal efficiency. He didn't look back, but his body acted as a constant shield between the gunfire and Sofía, who held Mateo tucked securely under her chin, her medical bag slung over her shoulder. Twice, men in tactical gear burst through the side hallways; both times, Nicolás fired with a calm, terrifying precision that brought them down before they could even level their weapons.

"Down here!" Nicolás muttered, shoving open a heavy, disguised wood panel near the back office. It revealed a steel staircase leading deep into the foundations of the mansion.

They descended into a sprawling, high-tech bunker lined with security monitors, communications gear, and a small medical bay. The heavy steel door sealed shut behind them with a definitive, pressurized hiss, cutting off the sounds of the battle above.

Sofía collapsed onto a leather sofa, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Mateo was crying, terrified by the loud noises, but he wasn't in physical pain. She immediately began rocking him, humming a low, soothing lullaby she used in the pediatric ward.

"Are you hurt?" Nicolás asked, his voice rough. He was standing over her, his eyes scanning her body for any sign of blood.

"I'm fine. Mateo is fine," Sofía said, her voice trembling slightly but remaining unbroken. She looked up at him, seeing a dark stain spreading across the shoulder of his white shirt. "You're bleeding."

Nicolás glanced down at his shoulder. "A graze from a ricochet. It's nothing."

"Sit down," Sofía commanded, her inner nurse overriding her fear of the mafia boss.

"Sofía, I need to monitor the security feeds—"

"I said, sit down, Nicolás," she repeated, her voice carrying an authority that surprised even him. "You can look at the monitors while I dress the wound. If it infects, you're useless to your son."

Nicolás stared at her for a long second, then a low, genuine laugh escaped his chest. He sat down on the edge of the medical table, unbuttoning his shirt to reveal a long, jagged furrow across his left deltoid. It was bleeding heavily, but the muscle wasn't severed.

Sofía set Mateo safely in a portable bassinet inside the safe room, then opened her medical bag. Her hands were steady as she cleaned the wound with antiseptic.

Nicolás didn't even flinch as the alcohol burned his flesh. He kept his eyes fixed on her face, studying the fierce concentration in her brown eyes, the stray wisps of dark hair that had fallen out of her neat bun, the absolute dedication to her craft.

"You're an extraordinary woman, Sofía Reyes," he murmured, his voice losing its harsh edge, becoming something intimate, almost tender.

"I'm just a nurse doing my job," she said, focusing on stitching the torn skin. "I've treated gunshot wounds before. In the General Hospital, we see the casualties of your world every single day. Young boys, innocent bystanders... all caught in the crossfire of men who want to own things they didn't build."

Nicolás’s expression grew somber. "You think I'm a monster."

"I think you've chosen a monstrous path," Sofía said softly, tying off the final stitch and applying a clean gauze dressing. "But I also saw a man who was willing to humble himself before a poor nurse just to save his little boy. A monster doesn't love his son the way you do. A monster doesn't have the capacity for the grief I saw in your eyes when he was screaming."

She stood close to him, her hands resting on his chest for a brief second as she smoothed the bandage. Nicolás reached up, his large, warm hand covering hers, trapping it against his heartbeat. It was fast, strong, and steady.

"I didn't choose this path to build an empire of blood, Sofía," he whispered, looking deep into her eyes. "I took over my father's business because if I didn't, my mother and her associates would have destroyed this family years ago. I kept it clean where I could—shipping, logistics, security. But tonight... tonight shows me that the poison isn't just outside my walls. It's inside my own bloodline."

He leaned in slightly, his breath warm against her lips. "You saved my son, Sofía. You brought light into a house that has been dark for forty years. I don't know how to be the man you want me to be... but I want to learn."

Before Sofía could answer, the primary security monitor on the wall flared to life. It showed the main study upstairs.

Standing in the center of the room, flanked by three heavily armed men wearing the insignia of the Treviño cartel, was Doña Leonor Velasco. She was holding a heavy manila folder—the original deeds to the Velasco shipping ports.

"Nicolás," Leonor’s voice crackled through the bunker's intercom system. She looked directly into the security camera, her face twisted with a cold, triumphant malice. "I know you are in your hole. The Treviños own the perimeter now. Open the vault and hand over the encryption keys for the offshore accounts... or we will burn this entire mansion down with you and that charity-case girl inside it."
