Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Silk

The air in the nursery turned freezing cold. Doña Leonor’s fingers tightened around the amber glass bottle, her knuckles turning as white as her pearls. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the aristocratic matriarch slipped, revealing a calculating, desperate woman beneath.

"I am the matriarch of this family," Leonor said, her voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper. "Every choice made in this household goes through me. I hired the laundry service. I approved the imports. If there is a flaw in the product, it is the fault of the German manufacturer, not the grandmother who sought only the finest for her bloodline."

Sofía didn't back down. She stood her ground, holding the sleeping Mateo securely against her chest. "An antimicrobial finish is one thing, Doña Leonor. But this concentrated preservative is a industrial-grade additive meant for heavy canvas and carpets, not a newborn’s skin. The warning label explicitly states it must be diluted one hundred times over. This bottle is pure, unadulterated concentrate."

Nicolás stepped between them, his towering frame casting a massive shadow over his mother. The sheer mass of his presence filled the room with a suffocating gravity. "Mother," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm—the low, quiet tone he used right before an empire fell. "Why is an industrial toxin sitting in my son's private changing room?"

"It was recommended by the clinic in Zurich!" Leonor hissed, though a bead of sweat broke along her perfectly coiffed hairline. "To prevent any bacteria from entering the nursery. I only wanted him protected!"

"You wanted control," Sofía interrupted, her voice clear and unafraid of the mafia syndicates or the billions of pesos represented in the room. "You wanted to be the one who curated his environment so perfectly that Valeria and Nicolás would have to rely entirely on your staff, your imports, and your rules."

Leonor scoffed, turning to her son. "Are you going to let this... this charity-case nurse insult me in your own home? Nicolás, look at her clothes! She smells of public buses and cheap detergent. She is trying to engineer a crisis to insert herself into our wealth!"

Nicolás didn’t look at his mother. His gray eyes were locked entirely on Sofía. He saw the fierce, unyielding protective instinct in the way she cradled Mateo, the way her thumbs gently stroked the boy's back, keeping him anchored in his deep, healing sleep.

"Don Esteban," Nicolás called out.

The elderly butler appeared at the door instantly, his face solemn. "Yes, Don Nicolás?"

"Take the bottle. Seal it in a secure locker in my private study. No one touches it until my personal toxicologist analyzes the chemical composition." Nicolás’s gaze finally shifted to his mother, cold and absolute. "And until that report is on my desk, Mother... you are barred from the nursery wing."

Leonor gasped, her face contorting with rage. "You are banishing your own mother for the word of a peasant?"

"I am protecting my heir," Nicolás replied, his voice clipping her words like a guillotine. "Leave."

With a sharp intake of breath, Leonor spun on her heel and stormed out, her heavy silk skirts rustling like a nest of disturbed vipers.

Valeria, who had been watching from the corner, let out a ragged sob. She looked at Sofía, then at Mateo, who remained peacefully asleep, his tiny breathing rhythm matching Sofía’s steady heartbeat. "He hasn't slept like that since the day we brought him home," Valeria whispered, a mixture of profound relief and agonizing guilt washing over her features. "I am his mother... and I didn't see it."

"Do not blame yourself," Sofía said softly, her voice carrying the practiced comfort she gave to grieving parents in the crowded wards of the General Hospital. "When you have unlimited wealth, you assume the danger comes from the outside—from assassins, from poisons, from rivals. You never think the danger is woven into the very fabric of the blankets you bought to keep him safe."

Nicolás walked over to Sofía. He was close enough that she could smell the expensive tobacco, cedar wood, and rain on his wool suit. He looked down at his son's face, which was already losing its angry, swollen flush.

"You will stay here," Nicolás commanded. It wasn't a request; it was an edict from a man used to buying or forcing compliance.

Sofía looked up, her brown eyes meeting his steel-gray ones without an ounce of fear. "I have a shift at the General Hospital at seven o'clock tomorrow morning, Señor Velasco. I have patients who rely on me—people who cannot afford private security and gold-plated cribs."

"I will buy out your contract," Nicolás said flatly. "Name the amount. Triple your annual salary. Quadruple it. You will stay in this mansion as Mateo's exclusive medical guardian until he is fully healed."

"My profession is not an auction, Señor Velasco," Sofía said, her tone hardening. "I am a nurse, not a piece of property you can add to your collection. If I stay, it will be because the patient requires my care, and it will be on my terms."

Nicolás’s jaw tightened. His men killed for lesser defiances. Yet, looking at this woman who held his entire world in her arms, he felt a strange, unfamiliar sensation: respect.

"Name your terms," he growled.

"First, I am not your servant. I will sleep in a room adjacent to the nursery, but I will not wear a maid's uniform, and I will not be ordered around by your security detail. Second, my hospital shifts will be covered legally by a paid leave which you will fund directly to the hospital's charity wing as a donation. And third... you will stop looking at me like you are trying to decide which cemetery to put me in."

A tiny, almost imperceptible twitch appeared at the corner of Nicolás’s mouth—the ghost of a smile that hadn't crossed his face in years. "Agreed. Don Esteban will prepare the guest suite next door. Welcome to the Velasco mansion, Nurse Reyes."
