PART 16 – THE CEMETERY OF SECRETS

The following morning, a heavy fog covered the outskirts of Mexico City.

It clung to the old roads like a ghost refusing to leave.

Nicolás drove the black SUV through the mist while Don Esteban sat silently in the passenger seat. Neither man spoke. In the back seat, Daniel stared out the window, clutching the wooden box that had changed all of their lives.

Sofía had wanted to come.

Nicolás had refused.

"If this is a trap, I won't risk you or Mateo."

She hadn't argued.

Instead, she kissed him softly before he left.

"Come home."

"I always do."

The cemetery appeared through the fog.

It was ancient.

Half of the headstones had collapsed.

Wild vines climbed over broken angels carved from stone.

No caretaker.

No visitors.

Only silence.

The iron gate creaked open as the three stepped inside.

Daniel looked around nervously.

"This place feels..."

"Wrong."

Don Esteban nodded.

"It always did."

They followed the map until they reached the oldest section of the cemetery.

There, beneath a dying oak tree, stood four stone graves.

Three bore names.

The fourth...

Had no name at all.

Instead, a raven had been carved into the marble.

Nicolás frowned.

"There are four graves."

Don Esteban stared in disbelief.

"There were only three of us."

He knelt before the unnamed grave.

The two silver keys suddenly felt heavy in Nicolás's pocket.

Almost instinctively, he reached toward the headstone.

His fingers brushed against the raven.

Click.

A hidden mechanism unlocked.

The stone slowly shifted aside.

Daniel gasped.

"Beneath it..."

A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.

"Stay behind me," Nicolás said.

He switched on a flashlight.

The underground tunnel smelled of dust and damp earth.

Old electrical cables lined the walls.

Someone had built this place carefully.

Not a tomb.

A bunker.

At the end of the corridor stood a heavy steel door.

In its center...

Two keyholes.

Nicolás looked at Don Esteban.

"The keys."

With trembling hands, Don Esteban inserted the first silver key.

Daniel inserted the second.

The locks turned together.

A loud metallic click echoed underground.

The door slowly opened.

Inside...

Time had stood still.

Shelves filled with boxes.

Old filing cabinets.

Photographs.

Audio tapes.

Maps.

And at the center of the room...

A massive leather-bound ledger.

Covered in dust.

Don Esteban's eyes filled with tears.

"The ledger..."

"It still exists."

Nicolás carefully lifted it onto a table.

The cover bore only one word.

VERITAS

Truth.

He opened the first page.

Names.

Thousands of names.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police commanders.

Business executives.

Cartel leaders.

Beside every name were dates, payments, crimes, and signatures.

Daniel whispered,

"My grandfather protected this?"

Don Esteban nodded slowly.

"It was supposed to expose corruption."

"Instead..."

"It became the reason people were murdered."

As Nicolás turned another page...

A folded envelope slipped onto the floor.

His name was written across it.

To Nicolás Velasco

He frowned.

"How could this..."

Don Esteban looked equally confused.

"No one knew you'd exist."

Nicolás carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

If you're reading this...

Then I failed.

My name is Gabriel Ortega.

Esteban thinks I'm dead.

I allowed him to believe it.

It was the only way to protect him.

Nicolás read aloud as Don Esteban listened in stunned silence.

There were never three brothers.

There were four.

One betrayed us before the oath was ever spoken.

He disappeared before we could expose him.

He became richer.

More powerful.

Invisible.

If he is still alive...

He will come for the ledger.

Trust no one wearing a smile.

The letter ended with six words.

He calls himself The Benefactor.

Don Esteban's face lost all color.

"No..."

"He survived."

Nicolás looked up.

"You know who this is?"

The old man closed his eyes.

"I prayed I was wrong."

"But Salazar..."

"Was never the leader."

At that exact moment—

The lights inside the bunker shut off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Daniel screamed.

"Nicolás!"

The emergency flashlight flickered on.

Then—

BOOM!

The tunnel entrance exploded.

Dust filled the air.

Stone rained from the ceiling.

"They've found us!" Nicolás shouted.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Bullets tore through the steel doorway.

Nicolás pushed Daniel behind a cabinet.

"Stay down!"

Three masked men rushed into the bunker.

The first barely crossed the doorway before Nicolás tackled him to the ground.

The pistol slid across the floor.

The second attacker raised an assault rifle.

Before he could fire—

Don Esteban smashed an old metal chair across his back.

The weapon discharged harmlessly into the ceiling.

The third attacker grabbed the ledger.

"No!"

Daniel lunged forward.

The little boy clung to the heavy book with all his strength.

The masked man shoved him violently aside.

Daniel struck the concrete floor.

His head hit hard.

"Daniel!" Nicolás roared.

With a furious punch, Nicolás knocked the attacker unconscious.

Silence returned.

Only heavy breathing remained.

Sofía's phone rang inside the mansion.

She answered immediately.

"Nicolás?"

Static.

Then his voice.

"We've been attacked."

Her heart stopped.

"Are you alright?"

"We're alive."

"But they know about the bunker."

She didn't hesitate.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"I said I'm coming."

She hung up.

Back inside the bunker...

Nicolás knelt beside Daniel.

The boy slowly opened his eyes.

"I'm okay..."

Sofía had taught him enough first aid to recognize a concussion.

He smiled weakly.

"I didn't let them take it."

He pointed toward the ledger.

Still safe.

Nicolás gently hugged him.

"You were incredibly brave."

Don Esteban examined the unconscious attackers.

One detail caught his attention.

Each man had the same tattoo behind his left ear.

A raven.

But...

This raven had four wings.

The old man's expression froze.

"The fourth brother..."

"He built an army."

Meanwhile...

Miles away...

Ricardo Salazar received a phone call.

"They escaped."

Salazar remained calm.

"And the ledger?"

"We couldn't recover it."

He sighed.

"As expected."

The caller sounded confused.

"Then why send only three men?"

Salazar smiled faintly.

"Because I wasn't trying to steal the ledger."

"I wanted Nicolás..."

"...to find the letter."

He looked toward a large portrait hanging on his office wall.

The face in the painting remained hidden in shadow.

"The game is finally beginning."

As the sun began to set...

The Velasco family reunited at the estate.

Mateo ran into Nicolás's arms.

"Daddy!"

Nicolás hugged him tighter than ever.

For a brief moment...

Everything else disappeared.

The danger.

The secrets.

The ghosts.

Only family mattered.

But inside his pocket...

The final page of Gabriel's letter remained folded.

He hadn't shown it to anyone.

Not even Don Esteban.

Because written on the back...

In fresh red ink...

Were eight chilling words.

The Benefactor is already inside your family.

Nicolás slowly looked around the room.

Sofía.

Mateo.

Daniel.

Don Esteban.

The house staff.

The security guards.

Someone close to them...

Could not be trusted.

And somewhere in the mansion...

Hidden from everyone's sight...

May you like

Then transmitted everything it had just seen.
