Chapter 1 - THE DATE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The email from the fertility clinic remained open on my laptop.

I read the same sentence again.

Then again.

Patient: Connor Hale. Procedure: Bilateral vasectomy. Date: Fourteen months ago.

My fingers went cold.

Alyssa had announced she was twelve weeks pregnant.

That meant conception had happened roughly three months ago.

Fourteen months after Connor's vasectomy.

I looked down at Brinley, sleeping peacefully in my arms.

Her tiny fingers curled around the edge of her blanket.

She was the only innocent person in this entire mess.

I closed the laptop.

Parker sat across from me, watching my face.

"You're thinking it too," I said.

He didn't answer immediately.

"Yes."

"What are the possibilities?"

"Several."

"Give me the worst one."

Parker leaned forward.

"The pregnancy could be someone else's."

My stomach tightened.

"And the second-worst?"

"Someone knew about Connor's vasectomy and deliberately created a story around it."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

"Money. Status. Revenge. Manipulation. Pick one."

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the morning was perfectly ordinary.

Cars passed.

A neighbor walked a dog.

A delivery truck stopped at the curb.

It was almost offensive how normal the world looked.

Connor had thrown divorce papers at me while our daughter was barely two hours old.

He had called her worthless.

His mother had celebrated.

Alyssa had walked into my hospital room announcing the existence of an heir.

And now I was beginning to suspect the baby they were celebrating might not even belong to Connor.

Parker reached across the table.

"Don't confront them."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

I smiled faintly.

"I want everything documented."

His expression changed.

"Everything?"

"Every message. Every transfer. Every lie."

Parker nodded.

"Then we do this properly."

That afternoon, Connor sent me a text.

Don't make this difficult. Sign the divorce papers by Friday.

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

Alyssa and I are getting married next month.

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the arrogance was almost unbelievable.

He thought I was fighting for him.

He didn't understand.

I wasn't trying to save my marriage.

I was trying to find out how much of my life he had stolen.

I replied with three words.

Congratulations, Connor.

He immediately responded.

Thank you. I knew you'd eventually understand.

I put the phone down.

Parker looked at me.

"What did he say?"

"He thinks I'm accepting defeat."

Parker smiled.

"Let him."

Two days later, I discovered something far more interesting.

The company Connor claimed as his had received a private transfer from one of my family trusts.

A transfer made six years ago.

The exact month we married.

And the amount wasn't small.

It was enough to explain how Connor had gone from drowning in debt to owning a rapidly expanding company.

I stared at the documents.

Connor hadn't built his empire.

My family had financed it.

And apparently, he had never known.

I looked at Parker.

"How much of the company is actually mine?"

He closed the folder.

"That's the question we're going to answer."

I looked down at Brinley.

"Then let's begin."

Because Connor had spent six years believing he was the man who gave me everything.

He had no idea.

May you like

I had been the woman who gave him everything.

And I was finally preparing to take it back.
