PART 14 – FIRE AT DAWN

The sunrise over Mexico City should have been beautiful.
Instead, it reflected in Nicolás Velasco's eyes like the glow of a warning.
He stood in his office, watching Dr. Ricardo Salazar's SUV disappear down the road.
Neither man had spoken.
Neither needed to.
Their brief glance through the clinic window had said everything.
The peace was over.
Inside the mansion, Don Esteban carefully locked the study door.
The old photograph, the bloodstained letter, the two silver keys, and Elena's camera were spread across his desk.
For hours he stared at the faded faces in the photograph.
Three young men.
Three sworn brothers.
One dream.
One betrayal.
One survivor.
He traced the scratched-out face with trembling fingers.
"We should have buried you when we had the chance," he whispered.
Meanwhile...
Daniel and Mateo sat beneath the large oak tree in the garden.
Mateo proudly showed Daniel how to build a toy dinosaur fortress.
"You have to make the walls taller."
"Why?"
"So monsters can't get in."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Sometimes monsters already know the way."
Mateo looked confused.
"My daddy scares monsters away."
Daniel wished he could believe that.
Inside the clinic...
Sofía gathered her nurses.
"I want every child's medical records backed up."
"Store copies in the cloud and offline."
"If anything happens here, we cannot lose our patients' information."
One of the volunteers frowned.
"You think we're in danger?"
Sofía forced a smile.
"I think preparation saves lives."
That evening...
Nicolás doubled the estate's security.
Additional guards patrolled the perimeter.
Thermal cameras scanned the gardens.
Motion sensors were activated.
Every visitor was screened.
Everything appeared secure.
Almost...
Too secure.
Because while everyone watched the gates...
No one noticed the small maintenance van parked two blocks away.
Inside sat a man wearing an electrical company's uniform.
He wasn't repairing power lines.
He was watching the estate through binoculars.
A voice came through his earpiece.
"Status?"
"The family increased security."
"No problem."
"Proceed with Phase Two."
The man smiled.
"I already have."
At exactly 3:17 a.m.
The lights inside the community clinic flickered.
One nurse looked toward the ceiling.
"Power surge?"
Another shrugged.
"It happens."
The emergency generator activated automatically.
Everything seemed normal.
Five minutes later...
The generator suddenly shut down.
Darkness swallowed the building.
Outside...
Hidden beneath the clinic's foundation...
A small explosive charge ignited.
Not large enough to destroy the building.
Just enough...
To rupture the main gas line.
At 3:29 a.m.
The first spark came from a damaged electrical panel.
Then—
WHOOM!
A deafening explosion shattered the silence.
Flames burst through the eastern wing of the clinic.
Windows exploded outward.
Smoke billowed into the night sky.
Inside the mansion...
Nicolás bolted upright.
"What was that?"
Before anyone answered—
The fire alarm screamed.
Within seconds...
The estate erupted into chaos.
Guards rushed toward the clinic.
Volunteers grabbed fire extinguishers.
Don Esteban ordered everyone away from the burning structure.
"The oxygen storage!"
"Get everyone back!"
Sofía was already running barefoot across the courtyard.
"My patients!"
Nicolás caught her arm.
"No!"
"There could be another explosion."
"There are people inside!"
"I'm going."
"I'm coming with you."
Without another word...
They disappeared into the smoke together.
The heat inside the clinic was unbearable.
Ceiling tiles crashed to the floor.
Black smoke filled every hallway.
Sofía covered her mouth with a wet cloth.
"The pediatric ward!"
She heard crying.
A little girl was trapped beneath a collapsed cabinet.
Sofía lifted the heavy wood with every ounce of strength she had.
"Come here!"
The child crawled into her arms.
Nicolás carried both of them toward the exit.
Another explosion rocked the building.
The ceiling above them cracked.
A burning beam crashed down—
Nicolás shoved Sofía aside.
The timber slammed onto his shoulder.
He gritted his teeth but didn't let go of the child.
"Run!"
She refused.
Together...
They lifted the beam.
Barely.
They escaped seconds before the hallway collapsed behind them.
Outside...
Firefighters finally arrived.
Water cannons blasted the flames.
Volunteers organized the patients.
Miraculously...
Everyone had survived.
Not a single life had been lost.
But the clinic...
The first clinic Sofía had built with hope, sacrifice, and love...
Was gone.
She stood silently watching the roof collapse.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Nicolás wrapped his arm around her.
"They didn't destroy your dream."
She looked at the burning ruins.
"It feels like they did."
He gently turned her toward the crowd.
Hundreds of former patients had gathered outside the gates.
An elderly man stepped forward.
"My grandson is alive because of this clinic."
A young mother spoke next.
"My daughter learned to walk because of Dr. Sofía."
Then another voice.
"And my wife survived cancer."
Soon...
Dozens of people began arriving.
Carrying blankets.
Food.
Medical supplies.
Construction tools.
One little boy held out a jar.
"My savings."
"I want to help rebuild."
Sofía covered her mouth.
She couldn't speak.
Nicolás whispered,
"You built more than a clinic."
"You built a family."
Across the city...
From the rooftop of an abandoned warehouse...
Dr. Ricardo Salazar watched the smoke rising into the dawn sky.
One of his men smiled.
"The building is finished."
Salazar didn't smile back.
"No."
"It isn't."
"We wanted fear."
"Instead..."
He lowered his binoculars.
"They earned loyalty."
His bodyguard looked confused.
"What now?"
Salazar's expression became cold.
"If fire couldn't break them..."
"We'll take what matters most."
Back at the estate...
Investigators searched through the ruins.
One firefighter approached Nicolás.
"Sir..."
"We found this."
He handed Nicolás a partially melted metal object.
A timing device.
Professional.
Military-grade.
This had not been an accident.
As Nicolás examined it...
His phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A calm voice spoke.
"I warned you."
Nicolás's eyes narrowed.
"Salazar."
"I merely wanted to remind you..."
"You can't save everyone."
The line went silent for a moment.
Then Salazar added quietly,
"The clinic was only a greeting."
Click.
The call ended.
Nicolás slowly lowered the phone.
Behind him...
Mateo stood on the mansion steps, clutching his stuffed dinosaur.
"Daddy..."
"Why is Mama crying?"
Nicolás knelt in front of his son.
He hugged him tightly.
"Because sometimes..."
"...bad people are afraid of good hearts."
Mateo frowned.
"Are the bad people coming here?"
Nicolás looked toward the smoking ruins.
His voice was calm.
Steady.
Certain.
"No."
"They're already here."
Far beyond the estate walls...
Hidden behind a line of trees...
A drone hovered silently in the morning sky.
Its tiny camera zoomed in...
Not on Nicolás.
Not on Sofía.
But on little Mateo.
May you like
A red targeting square locked onto the smiling two-year-old.
Then the drone quietly flew away.
