PART 15 – THE BOY WHO DISAPPEARED

Three days after the fire, the smell of smoke still lingered over the Velasco estate.

The ruins of the community clinic stood behind temporary fencing, a painful reminder of what had been lost. Yet every morning, hundreds of volunteers continued to arrive. Bricklayers, electricians, doctors, nurses, and ordinary citizens worked side by side, determined to rebuild what hatred had tried to destroy.

Sofía walked among them, thanking each volunteer personally.

"You don't have to do this," she told an elderly carpenter.

The man smiled as he hammered another nail into a wooden frame.

"You saved my granddaughter's life."

"This is the least I can do."

Nearby, children painted colorful murals on temporary clinic walls.

Instead of fear, the fire had inspired hope.

That was exactly what frustrated Ricardo Salazar.

Across the city, inside a luxurious penthouse overlooking Mexico City, Salazar watched the rebuilding efforts on a large television screen.

One of his men entered quietly.

"They've already raised enough donations to rebuild."

Salazar poured himself a glass of mineral water.

"I expected as much."

"The explosion made them stronger."

The younger man hesitated.

"What are your orders?"

Salazar's expression became cold.

"Then we stop attacking their buildings."

He turned toward the enormous window.

"We attack their hearts."

That Saturday, the Velasco Foundation organized a charity festival in the city's central park.

There were free medical checkups, music, games for children, and food donated by local restaurants.

Families filled the park from sunrise.

Mateo had been excited all week.

"Daddy!"

He tugged on Nicolás's hand.

"I want my face painted!"

Nicolás laughed.

"Only if you promise not to scare Mama."

"I want to be a dinosaur!"

"You already are."

Mateo giggled.

Daniel, now healthier and smiling more each day, walked beside them.

For the first time in years, he looked like an ordinary little boy instead of a frightened survivor.

Sofía spent the morning treating children at a mobile clinic while Nicolás greeted volunteers and donors.

Everything appeared peaceful.

Security guards blended discreetly into the crowd.

Police officers patrolled nearby.

No suspicious activity.

At least...

None that anyone noticed.

Across the festival grounds, a woman wearing a bright yellow balloon vendor's uniform smiled warmly as children gathered around her.

She handed each child a colorful balloon.

To everyone else, she looked harmless.

She wasn't.

Hidden beneath the balloon cart was a powerful encrypted radio.

She spoke softly.

"Target is approaching."

Mateo ran toward the balloon stand.

"Daddy!"

"Can I have the green dinosaur balloon?"

Nicolás smiled.

"One balloon."

"No more."

Mateo nodded enthusiastically.

As Nicolás paid the vendor, another child accidentally bumped into him.

Coins scattered across the ground.

"I'm so sorry!" the boy's mother apologized.

"It's alright," Nicolás replied, kneeling to help collect them.

It took less than five seconds.

When he stood again...

Mateo was gone.

"Daddy?"

Silence.

Nicolás looked around.

No tiny dinosaur shirt.

No green balloon.

No laughter.

Only crowds of strangers.

His heartbeat stopped.

"Mateo?"

He called louder.

"Mateo!"

Sofía immediately looked up from the clinic tent.

She saw Nicolás's face.

Every color had disappeared from it.

She ran.

"What happened?"

"He was right here."

"Mateo!"

Within seconds, security radios exploded with activity.

"Code Red."

"Missing child."

"Lock every exit."

The festival instantly transformed from celebration to emergency.

Nicolás searched every path.

Every playground.

Every tent.

His voice grew hoarse.

"Mateo!"

Nothing.

Sofía fought to remain calm.

"He couldn't have gone far."

But inside...

She felt terror unlike anything she had ever known.

Exactly seven minutes later...

One of the security guards shouted.

"I found him!"

Everyone rushed toward the fountain at the center of the park.

There sat Mateo.

Completely unharmed.

Swinging his little legs.

Holding his stuffed dinosaur.

And smiling.

Sofía collapsed to her knees, wrapping him in her arms.

"Oh, thank God..."

She kissed his forehead over and over.

Nicolás knelt beside them.

"Buddy..."

"Where did you go?"

Mateo answered innocently.

"The nice lady took me."

Every adult froze.

"What lady?"

"She had pretty flowers."

"What did she want?"

Mateo reached into his pocket.

"I forgot."

Then he pulled something out.

A silver pocket watch.

Very old.

Very expensive.

Its cover was engraved with a raven.

Don Esteban's face turned white.

"No..."

Back at the estate, the family examined the antique watch.

Inside the cover was another engraving.

Time never forgets.

Below it...

A date.

1994.

And beneath the date...

One name.

Gabriel Ortega.

Don Esteban slowly sat down.

His breathing became uneven.

Nicolás looked at him.

"You know him."

The old man nodded.

"He was..."

"My younger brother."

Silence filled the room.

"I thought he died thirty-two years ago."

Mateo climbed onto Don Esteban's lap.

"The lady said Grandpa would know."

"What exactly did she tell you?"

Mateo thought carefully.

"She said..."

He spoke slowly, repeating every word exactly as he had heard them.

"Tell the old man that time is running out."

Then he added,

"And tell him..."

"The fourth brother is waiting."

The room fell silent.

Even Daniel looked confused.

Don Esteban whispered,

"There were never four brothers."

That evening, Nicolás ordered every security recording from the festival.

Hours passed.

The technicians reviewed dozens of cameras.

Finally...

One video showed Mateo walking away with a woman carrying colorful balloons.

Her face remained hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat.

Seven minutes later...

She returned alone.

She simply disappeared into the crowd.

No vehicle.

No trace.

As if she had vanished into thin air.

Across the city...

Inside an abandoned cathedral...

The mysterious woman entered quietly.

She removed her hat.

Long dark hair fell over her shoulders.

Ricardo Salazar stood waiting near the altar.

"You delivered the message?"

"Yes."

"And the child?"

"He wasn't frightened."

Salazar smiled.

"He reminds me of Nicolás."

The woman looked uncomfortable.

"He trusted me."

Salazar's smile disappeared.

"Good."

"Children always trust the wrong people."

She looked away.

For the first time...

A flicker of guilt crossed her face.

Back at the Velasco estate, long after everyone had gone to bed...

Don Esteban remained alone in his study.

The pocket watch lay open beside the old photograph.

He compared the engraved raven on the watch to the raven carved into Daniel's wooden box.

They matched perfectly.

Suddenly...

He noticed something he had never seen before.

Hidden beneath the photograph's frame...

A folded piece of yellowed paper.

His hands trembled as he unfolded it.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a map.

And in the center of the map...

Marked with a red X...

Was a forgotten cemetery on the outskirts of Mexico City.

Written across the top, in handwriting Don Esteban recognized instantly, were six chilling words:

"Where the first brother never died."

Don Esteban's heart pounded.

He immediately reached for the phone.

"Nicolás..."

"I know where we're going tomorrow."

Outside his study window...

Hidden among the trees...

A lone figure watched the mansion through a sniper scope.

The red laser settled briefly...

Not on Nicolás.

Not on Don Esteban.

But on Sofía.

The figure slowly whispered into a radio,

May you like

"Target confirmed."

Then the laser disappeared into the darkness.
