Chapter 9 - The Betrayal

Security rushed through the penthouse.

Marcus pulled Rosa and Isabella into the safe room.

"Stay here."

"No," Rosa said.

"Rosa."

"I know who did it."

Marcus stopped.

"Who?"

She whispered:

"Victor."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

He called Diana.

"Diana, get everyone out of the building."

There was silence.

Then Diana said:

"Marcus..."

"What?"

"I'm sorry."

The line went dead.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Diana had betrayed him too.

He felt something cold settle inside his chest.

For years he'd believed money protected people.

He'd been wrong.

Money only made betrayal more expensive.

The safe-room door suddenly unlocked.

Marcus turned.

Rosa screamed.

But the man standing there wasn't Victor.

It was Richard.

Marcus's father.

He had come armed.

"I know where your mother is."

Marcus stared.

"What?"

May you like

Richard looked toward Isabella.

"She's alive."
