Chapter 15 - The Little Girl Who Changed His Life Forever

One year earlier, Marcus Harrington had believed he had everything.

A $4.7 billion fortune.

A Manhattan penthouse.

Private jets.

Yachts.

Luxury cars.

A company worth billions.

But on his thirty-fourth birthday, he had woken up completely alone.

No messages.

No cake.

No family.

No laughter.

Nothing.

Then a three-year-old girl had walked into his kitchen carrying a stuffed rabbit.

She had climbed onto a chair.

She had looked him straight in the eyes.

And she'd said:

"You're the birthday man."

He had thought she was simply a child.

He had no idea she would become the reason he found his family.

The reason he discovered the truth about his mother.

The reason he survived the betrayal.

The reason he learned how to love again.

Three years later, Isabella stood on a stage at her elementary school graduation.

Marcus sat in the front row.

Rosa sat beside him.

Eleanora held a box of tissues.

Richard was pretending he wasn't crying.

Isabella walked to the microphone.

She looked directly at Marcus.

"I want to thank my uncle."

Marcus smiled.

She continued.

"Before I knew him, I thought rich people had everything."

The audience laughed.

Isabella smiled.

"But then I met him."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"And I learned something."

She paused dramatically.

"Sometimes the richest person in the room is actually the loneliest."

The room went quiet.

Marcus felt tears forming.

Isabella continued.

"And sometimes all they need is one little girl to remind them that birthdays aren't about presents."

She looked at him.

"They're about people."

The audience applauded.

Marcus stood.

He didn't care that everyone was watching.

He walked onto the stage.

Isabella ran into his arms.

Marcus hugged her tightly.

"You changed my life."

She whispered:

"I know."

He laughed.

"How do you know?"

"Because Mama told me."

Marcus looked at Rosa.

Rosa smiled.

Then Isabella pulled back.

"Uncle Marcus?"

"Yes?"

"Do you remember your first birthday with me?"

"Of course."

"What did you wish for?"

Marcus thought about it.

The answer had changed over the years.

Back then, he'd wished for a second chance.

Now he knew he'd received one.

He looked at his mother.

His sister.

His niece.

His family.

Then he smiled.

"I wished for a family."

Isabella hugged him again.

"You got one."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Yes.

He had.

And for the first time in his life, the billionaire who had once owned almost everything finally understood what it meant to be rich.

Not because he had billions.

But because when he looked around the room...

Everyone was there.

No one had forgotten his birthday.

No one had left him alone.

And the little girl who had once climbed onto his kitchen table with a crooked cupcake had given him the one thing money could never buy.

A reason to come home.
