Chapter 5 - Someone Was Inside
Marcus woke Rosa immediately.
"Where's Isabella?"
Rosa jumped from bed.
"She's sleeping."
They rushed into the guest room.
Isabella was there.
Safe.
But the window was open.
The security alarm had not sounded.
Marcus's face turned cold.
Someone had bypassed his security system.
He called the guards.
Nothing.
No cameras showed an intruder.
Then Isabella woke.
"Mama?"
Rosa hugged her.
"It's okay."
The little girl looked at Marcus.
"Bad man came."
Everyone froze.
Marcus crouched beside her.
"What bad man?"
She pointed toward the closet.
"He said not to wake you."
Rosa's face went white.
Marcus opened the closet.
Empty.
But there was something hanging inside.
A black jacket.
Not belonging to anyone in the apartment.
Marcus touched the pocket.
Inside was a photograph.
His mother.
On the back:
Four years ago you buried the wrong woman.
Marcus's breathing stopped.
He called the investigator.
No answer.
Then another call came.
Victor.
"Marcus, we need to talk."
"About what?"
"The acquisition."
Marcus's voice hardened.
"No. About my mother."
Silence.
Then Victor said:
"Where did you hear that name?"
Marcus's blood ran cold.
"What name?"
Victor hung up.
Marcus stared at the phone.
He hadn't mentioned a name.
He hadn't even said what the photograph showed.
Someone had been listening.
Someone inside his company.
Someone close enough to know everything.
Marcus looked toward Rosa.
She whispered:
"Who is Victor?"

Marcus didn't answer.
Because suddenly he wasn't sure.
