Chapter 9: The Poisoned Pawn

The strategy worked with devastating efficiency. When the opening bell rang on Wall Street, the financial news networks were already screaming about the Vance-Chevalier merger. The artificial short-sale order was obliterated within minutes. Nemesis Trust was caught in a vice grip, losing an estimated one hundred and fifty million dollars in less than an hour.

Evelyn watched the numbers stabilize from her office, feeling a profound sense of triumph. But her victory was short-lived.

At noon, a courier delivered a sleek, unmarked black envelope directly to her desk. Inside was a single burner phone and a handwritten note: You played well, Evelyn. But the game isn't over. Look at the screen.

The burner phone lit up with an incoming video call. Evelyn answered it, her heart hammering against her ribs. The screen revealed a dimly lit, industrial basement. Bound to a chair, bruised and trembling, was Julian Vance. Standing behind him was a figure hidden in the shadows, holding a heavy silencer-equipped pistol.

"Evelyn..." Julian sobbed into the camera, blood dripping from his lip. "I’m sorry... they said they would clear my debts... they told me it was just a financial play... I didn't know they would—"

A harsh, synthesized voice cut through Julian’s pleas, emanating from the shadowed figure. "Evelyn Vance. You are quite the tactician. You destroyed the trust. You took Dominic’s remaining legacy and turned it into your own empire. But you forgot that money cannot buy security when you are dealing with people who have nothing left to lose."

"Who are you?" Evelyn demanded, keeping her voice completely level despite the terror clawing at her throat. "If this is about Dominic’s debt, I can pay you. Double whatever he promised you."

The shadow laughed, a dry, robotic sound. "Dominic is a fool who got caught. I don't work for him; he worked for me. He was my asset in the corporate world, a conduit for laundering international capital. When you destroyed him, you destroyed a pipeline that took ten years to build. You owe me more than money, Evelyn. You owe me an empire."

"Name your price," she countered, her mind racing, scanning the background of the video for any clue, any detail that her forensic team could use to trace the location.

"Tomorrow night is the annual Boston Heritage Gala," the voice commanded. "You will attend. You will publicly announce your resignation from Vance Holdings, and you will transfer the controlling voting rights to a proxy of my choosing. If you do this, Julian lives, and your precious daughter continues to breathe the fresh air of her estate. If you refuse, or if you involve the police... well, accidents happen to children all the time, don't they?"

The screen went black.

Evelyn dropped the phone onto the desk, her breath hitching. They were threatening Maya. The financial war had suddenly transformed into a lethal, visceral nightmare. She sank into her chair, the weight of the empire she had built suddenly feeling like a golden noose around her neck
