Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

Three weeks later.

The recovery from childbirth had given me a radiant, unshakable strength. I stood in front of the full-length mirror in my new suburban townhouse, smoothing down the jacket of a tailored cream-colored suit. Maya was fast asleep in her high-tech bassinet, watched over by a licensed pediatric nurse I had hired to ensure her absolute safety.

Today was the emergency shareholder meeting of Blackwell Enterprises.

When I stepped off the elevator on the 32nd floor of the corporate headquarters, the air was thick with panic. Board members were pacing the hallways, their phones pressed to their ears, their faces pale. The company’s stock had plummeted sixty percent in less than a month, and the international investors were demanding heads on a platter.

I walked directly into the executive boardroom.

Dominic was sitting at the head of the table, looking hollowed out. His expensive suit looked slightly too big for him now, his eyes shadowed by sleepless nights and the impending weight of a federal indictment. Sitting next to him was Charlotte’s father, Richard Vance (no relation to my family), a ruthless billionaire whose investment was the only thing keeping the company from liquidating.

"What is she doing here?" Dominic spat, slamming his pen onto the table as I took a seat at the far end. "This is a closed board meeting, Evelyn. You are an ex-wife with a minor alimony claim. Get out."

"Actually, Dominic," Richard Vance spoke up, his voice dangerously cold as he looked at his new son-in-law with pure disgust. "I invited her. Or rather, her attorney invited us."

Arthur Henderson stepped up behind me, placing a massive leather binder onto the polished mahogany table.

"Mr. Blackwell," Arthur announced, his voice booming through the room. "We are here to finalize the transition of assets. Over the last fourteen days, my client, Evelyn Vance, has successfully acquired eighty-five percent of the outstanding institutional debt of Blackwell Enterprises through her family's private equity firm."

Dominic froze, his hands beginning to shake visibly as he looked at the board members, who all quickly looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. "That's... that’s impossible. We had a non-disclosure agreement on the debt restructuring!"

"The NDA that you tried to force my client to sign in her post-delivery hospital bed?" Arthur asked with a biting irony. "The one that was never executed? You are in default on your construction loans, Dominic. And as the primary lienholder of the land leases beneath your flagship property, Evelyn has the legal right to execute an immediate foreclosure."
