Chapter 7: The Unseen Shadow

Chapter 7: The Unseen Shadow

The golden warmth of the afternoon sun felt like a protective shield, but as the last of the guests departed the estate, a subtle chill settled over the manicured lawns of Boston. Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of her study, rocking a sleeping Maya in her arms. The house was quiet, save for the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. For six months, she had breathed the clean air of freedom. The Vance name was no longer a symbol of Dominic’s manipulation; it was a fortress of her own making.

Yet, as she stared out into the twilight, an uncomfortable sensation pricked at the back of her neck. It was the familiar instinct that had kept her alive during the worst months of her marriage—the feeling of being watched.

"You’re just adjusting to the quiet, Evelyn," she whispered to herself, pressing a soft kiss onto Maya’s forehead before placing her gently in the crib.

Her phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was Arthur Harrison. His voice, usually a steady anchor of professional calm, held a sharp edge of anxiety. "Evelyn, I need you to look at the secure server immediately. We have an anomaly."

Evelyn’s fingers flew across her laptop keyboard. The Vance Holdings dashboard materialized, flashing a series of red alerts. "What am I looking at, Arthur? The quarterly reports were flawless."

"They were," Arthur said, his breathing heavy through the line. "But thirty minutes ago, someone initiated a massive, automated short-sale order on our primary hospitality stocks. It’s highly coordinated. Someone is trying to artificially trigger a panic sell-off, and they are using proprietary internal routing codes to do it."

Evelyn felt her blood run cold. Internal codes. "That’s impossible. Only you, myself, and the forensic team have access to those specific cryptographic keys."

"There’s more," Arthur continued, his tone dropping to a grim murmur. "The shell corporation funding the short-sale is registered in Delaware under the name Nemesis Trust. I ran the beneficial ownership through our offshore intelligence contacts. The ultimate beneficiary isn't a corporation. It’s an individual."

"Dominic," Evelyn breathed, the name tasting like ash on her tongue. "But he’s in a minimum-security facility in Pennsylvania. His assets were frozen. He has no internet access, no liquid capital."

"He doesn't need it if he has a proxy," Arthur warned. "Dominic was a monster, Evelyn, but he was a well-connected one. Someone on the outside is executing his final revenge play. If this short-sale succeeds when the markets open at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, Vance Holdings could lose forty percent of its valuation overnight. The board will panic, and the restructuring will collapse."

Evelyn closed her eyes, taking a deep, grounding breath. The old Evelyn would have panicked. The old Evelyn would have wept, wondering why the nightmare wouldn't end. But the woman who had dismantled a criminal empire from a hospital bed didn't cry. She calculated.

"Trace the IP address of the node that authorized the routing codes," Evelyn commanded, her voice steady and lethal. "If it’s internal, someone in our Boston office is a traitor. I want a name before midnight."

Ending the call, Evelyn walked back to the window. The darkness outside had deepened. Down by the wrought-iron gates of her estate, she noticed the dim headlights of a black sedan parked just under the shadow of the oak trees. The car had no license plates. As she stared at it, the headlights flashed twice, a deliberate, mocking greeting, before the vehicle melted into the night.

Dominic wasn't just trying to ruin her financially; he was trying to shatter her peace. He wanted her to know that even behind bars, he could reach out and touch her life.

She looked at her daughter, sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the storm brewing outside. "I built this world for you, Maya," Evelyn whispered, her jaw tightening. "And I will burn anyone who tries to tear it down."
