Chapter 10: Alliance in the Dark

Evelyn did not go to the police. She knew that institutional channels were too slow, too prone to leaks, and potentially compromised by the vast network of the shadow organization. Instead, she called upon a man who operated in the twilight zone between legality and absolute justice—Liam Vance.
Liam was Dominic’s estranged older brother, a former military intelligence operative who had severed all ties with the family years ago due to Dominic’s corrupt nature. He had lived a reclusive life, working as a high-level private security consultant, specializing in corporate counter-espionage.
Two hours after the threat, Liam arrived at Evelyn’s estate. He was tall, with a rugged, battle-hardened demeanor and piercing gray eyes that possessed none of Dominic’s vanity, but all of the intensity.
"I warned your father about Dominic years ago," Liam said, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone as he examined the burner phone Evelyn handed him. "My brother was a parasite. But the man who ran him—the one threatening you now—is Marcus Vance, our uncle. The world thinks he died in a boating accident in the Caribbean five years ago, but he merely faked his death to operate entirely in the black market."
Evelyn paced the room. "He wants me to surrender the company tomorrow night at the gala. He’s holding Julian hostage, and he threatened Maya. I can't lose her, Liam. I’d give away every single dollar I have to ensure her safety."
Liam stood up, walking over to her, his presence commanding and oddly reassuring. He placed a heavy, reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You won't have to give up anything. Marcus thrives on fear. He expects you to be compliance personified because you’re a mother. He doesn't know the woman who broke Dominic."
"What’s the plan?" Evelyn asked, looking up into his steady gray eyes, finding a strange, flickering spark of hope amidst the darkness.
"We play along," Liam explained, a calculated grin appearing on his face. "You go to the gala. You wear the dress, you smile for the cameras, and you prepare to make the announcement. Meanwhile, my team will use the digital signature from this burner phone video to pinpoint the exact location of Marcus’s safehouse. By the time you step up to the podium, I will have extracted Julian and neutralized Marcus’s leverage."
"And if you're late?" Evelyn pressed, her heart thumping. "If something goes wrong?"
May you like
"It won't," Liam said softly, his gaze lingering on hers with an intensity that made her breath catch for reasons that had nothing to do with fear. "I lost my family to corruption once, Evelyn. I won't let it happen to the only people left who carry the name with honor."
As they spent the night preparing the counter-strike, mapping out the security blueprint of the gala, a subtle shift occurred between them. For the first time in her life, Evelyn didn't feel like she was fighting alone. Liam wasn't looking for a quiet, submissive woman to manage; he respected her intellect, her strength, and her resilience. In the shadow of danger, an unbreakable bond was forged.
