Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Wedding Day

Outside the corporate headquarters, the Boston weather had turned crisp and cool, a beautiful New England autumn beginning to paint the trees in brilliant shades of crimson and gold.

As I walked down the granite steps of the building, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and Charlotte stepped out. She wasn't wearing her wedding dress anymore. She was dressed in a simple wool coat, her face pale, stripped of the arrogant high-society luster she had wielded so sharply in my hospital room.

"Evelyn," she called out, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped into my path.

I paused, looking at her calmly. "Charlotte."

"I... I wanted to apologize," she whispered, looking down at her shoes, her hands clutched tightly in her pockets. "In the hospital... I didn't know. Dominic told me you were completely taken care of. He told me the divorce was mutual and that there was no child involved. My father and I... we were fooled by him just as much as you were."

"No, Charlotte," I said gently, a faint expression of pity softening my face. "You weren't fooled the same way. You saw a business opportunity, and he saw a payday. You both used each other to build an illusion. The only difference is that my foundation was real."

Charlotte looked up, a tear finally slipping down her cheek. "He’s facing five years in federal prison, isn't he?"

"That’s for the judge to decide," I said, stepping past her toward my car. "But if I were you, I’d make sure your father checks the tax records on that wedding reception. I have a feeling Dominic put the entire four-hundred-thousand-dollar bill on a corporate credit card that now belongs to me."

As the town car pulled away from the curb, leaving Charlotte standing alone on the sidewalk, I looked out the window at the city skyline. The grand hotels, the luxury high-rises, the soaring towers—they were no longer symbols of a man’s arrogant ambition. They were now the secure assets that would fund the future of my daughter.
