Chapter 4 - The Price of Greed

The boardroom went dead silent. Even Richard Vance leaned back, a calculating expression crossing his face as he realized where the true power in the room now resided.

"Evelyn... please," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking as the reality of his complete financial ruin finally set in. "We built this together. You were the risk analyst. You know what this company means to the city. If you foreclose, thousands of people lose their jobs. Don't do this out of spite because of Charlotte."

"This isn't about spite, Dominic," I said, my voice calm, steady, and completely devoid of emotion. "This is about accountability. You told me our marriage was hurting your image. You told me you wanted a manageable divorce, a manageable scandal, a manageable wife. You left me in a hospital bed forty minutes after I pushed your daughter into this world because a business deal mattered more to you than human life."

I leaned forward, looking directly into his panicked soul. "I am not foreclosing on the company. I am removing the cancer."

Arthur slid a single, red-stamped corporate document across the glass table. It stopped right in front of Dominic.

"This is an immediate resolution for the termination of Dominic Blackwell as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board," Arthur announced. "By a majority vote of the debt-holders and the implicit consent of the Vance Trust, you are being stripped of all executive authority, effective immediately. Your personal shares will be liquidated to cover the embezzled funds identified by the IRS."

Dominic looked at the paper as if it were a death warrant. He turned to Richard Vance. "Richard, help me! Your daughter... our merger!"

"The merger is dead, Dominic," Richard said, standing up and buttoning his jacket, not even glancing at his son-in-law. "And as for my daughter, her annulment papers will be served to your office by morning. You lied about your liabilities, you lied about your family, and you are a liability to my name. I’m out."

One by one, the board members stood up, picking up their briefcases and walking out of the room, leaving Dominic sitting alone at the head of a table that no longer belonged to him.

He looked down at his trembling hands, a broken man who had chased an image until he had nothing left but a hollow shell.
