Chapter 1 - The Shattered Reception

The folder tore from the bedside table with a violent, paper-slashing sound. Dominic clutched it to his chest, his breathing ragged, the white rose boutonniere pinned to his tuxedo jacket crushing against his lapel. For a fraction of a second, the desperate, unhinged look in his eyes made him unrecognizable from the polished billionaire who used to grace the covers of Boston's premier business magazines.

"You think you can ruin me, Evelyn?" he hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low vibration as he backed toward the door. "This folder doesn't leave this room. Without these physical printouts, your attorney has nothing but digital metadata. I'll have my tech team scrub the cloud servers before sunrise."

Beside him, Charlotte looked like a ghost wrapped in tulle. Her expensive lace train was dragged across the sterile linoleum floor, smudged with gray hospital grime. "Dominic... what is in that folder? Why are you acting like this? We are supposed to be at our reception at the Four Seasons right now! My father has three hundred investors waiting to toast our merger!"

"Shut up, Charlotte!" Dominic snapped, his composure entirely gone.

Charlotte flinched as if she had been slapped. The realization that she had married a stranger was written across her face in stark, terrifying clarity.

"Mr. Blackwell," the labor and delivery nurse said, her voice dropping into a fiercely protective, zero-tolerance tone as she stepped directly between Dominic and my bed. "You need to put that folder down and step away from the patient immediately. Security is already outside the double doors."

I didn't panic. I didn't even raise my voice. I simply shifted my newborn daughter, positioning her tiny, warm head against the crook of my neck. Her breathing was a gentle, rhythmic puff of air against my collarbone—my anchor in the middle of their self-inflicted storm.

"Let him take it, Nurse Sarah," I said, a cold, serene smile playing on my lips.

Dominic paused, his hand on the door handle, looking back at me with a sudden, suspicious flicker of doubt. "What do you mean, let me take it?"

"Do you really think that after seven years of managing the risk portfolios for every single one of your acquisitions, I would keep the only copies of your offshore ledgers in a plastic hospital folder?" I asked, my voice cutting through the sterile room like a scalpel. "Dominic, you always underestimated me because I was quiet. You thought 'the calm one' meant 'the blind one.' That folder is a decoy. The certified forensic copies were couriered directly to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service at 9:00 a.m. this morning—the exact moment you walked down the aisle."

The heavy wooden door to my room swung open with a loud thud. Three burly hospital security guards stepped into the room, their radios crackling with static.

"Ma'am, is this the individual?" the lead guard asked, his eyes locking instantly onto Dominic’s crumpled tuxedo and the stolen folder in his hands.

"Yes," I said, looking directly into my ex-husband's bloodshot eyes. "Please escort my ex-husband and his new bride off the premises. And make sure the police are waiting at the main entrance. He’s currently holding stolen corporate evidence."
