Chapter 9 - The Family Execution

The confrontation did not happen in a courtroom. It happened in the formal dining room of the Castillo mansion on a rainy Friday evening.
Sofia Castillo sat at the long table, wearing a designer cream dress, her diamond earrings catching the candlelight. She had been summoned by Alejandro under the pretense of a family dinner to celebrate their return from Italy.
"Where is Elena, Alejandro?" Sofia asked, sipping her white wine with an elegant, practiced grace. "Her assistant said she was still resting upstairs. Honestly, I think the trauma has made her a bit reclusive. You should consider getting her specialized care in Europe."
"Specialized care like Bayview Senior Haven, Sofia?" Alejandro asked, his voice completely flat, devoid of any brotherly warmth.
Sofia’s hand froze mid-air, her wine glass trembling slightly. "What... what do you mean?"
Elena walked into the dining room from the shadows of the hallway. She wasn't wearing a designer dress; she wore the simple, dark suit of an executive officer. She placed the silver thumb drive directly onto Sofia’s plate.
"The encryption on the Zurich account was very clever, Sofia," Elena said, sitting down at the head of the table. "But you forgot that I spent three years listening to your phone calls through the ventilation shaft of the sub-basement. I knew your voice before I ever saw your face again."
Sofia stood up, her face turning a horrific, deathly pale color as she looked at Alejandro. "Alejandro, listen to me... Vivian forced me! She threatened to expose my private debts to the board! I didn't have a choice!"
Alejandro slowly stood up from his chair. The brotherly love that had defined his relationship with Sofia for thirty years disintegrated into dust. He looked at her not as a sister, but as a criminal accomplice who had stolen three years of his wife's life.

"Marcus has already delivered the digital records to the federal prosecutors, Sofia," Alejandro said, his voice vibrating with an immense, cold authority. "Your asset allocation within the Castillo trust is legally null and void. The private security team will escort you to the federal holding facility in downtown Miami within ten minutes. Do not call me. Do not call my lawyers. As of tonight, you no longer carry the name Castillo."
As the tactical guards led a sobbing, screaming Sofia out through the heavy oak doors, the house fell into a deep, profound silence. The last viper had been removed from the garden. The circle was finally clean.
