Chapter 2 - The Medical Haven

The eastern wing of the mansion was completely isolated from the rest of the estate. Alejandro had converted his late father’s private study into an emergency medical suite within forty-five minutes.
Dr. Evelyn Harrison, the Castillo family’s trusted physician, stood by the leather sofa where Elena lay wrapped in a soft, heavy cashmere blanket. The maid's uniform had been cut away, replaced by clean, medical scrubs. On the glass coffee table sat the preliminary medical logs, and the details were an indictment of pure human cruelty.
"It’s a miracle she’s alive, Alejandro," Dr. Harrison said, her face pale with professional rage as she drew Alejandro into the corner of the room. "The physical scarring on her wrists is consistent with long-term industrial zip-ties. She’s suffering from severe vitamin deficiency, muscle atrophy in her lower limbs, and a specific type of vocal cord strain that suggests she was threatened with violence every time she attempted to speak above a whisper."
Alejandro’s fist slammed into the oak bookcase, cracking the wood paneling. "Where was she kept, Evelyn? How could she be under my roof without my security grid detecting her?"
"The old sub-basement," a quiet, raspy voice called from the sofa.
Elena sat up, the blanket slipping from her shoulders. Her gray eyes, though haunted by a profound trauma, were clear and steady. The submissive maid persona had vanished, replaced by the indomitable spirit of the woman Alejandro had married.
"The mansion's original architectural plans from 1920 included a cold-storage vault beneath the wine cellar," Elena said, her voice shaking but resolute. "Vivian discovered it during the renovations four years ago. She altered the digital layout of the security system before you took over the main server, Alejandro. She kept me there. I only came up through the service elevator at 3:00 a.m. to scrub the floors while you were away on your international business trips. If I made a sound, she told me she would clear the offshore trust accounts containing my family’s medical legacy."
Alejandro knelt by the sofa, taking her scarred hands in his. "The offshore accounts... that’s why she stayed close to me. She was using your disappearance to manipulate the Castillo boards."

"She didn't work alone, Alejandro," Elena whispered, her fingers tightening around his with a sudden, desperate strength. "She had a ghost inside your network. Someone who told her exactly when your flights were landing. Someone who wiped the security logs every time the service elevator moved."
Alejandro’s jaw tightened until a muscle in his cheek twitched violently. The viper wasn't just in his house; it was in his inner circle.
