Chapter 7 - The Genoa Gambit

The port of Genoa was a sprawling matrix of blue container cranes, massive cargo vessels, and ancient stone docks that smelled of salt water and diesel fuel.

At the central administrative office of Moretti Marittima, a low-slung concrete building overlooking the main harbor, the remaining members of the Moretti family trust—Vivian’s older brother, Lorenzo, and their elderly uncle, Matteo—were in the middle of a frantic document-shredding operation.

"The American banks have blocked the secondary routing paths, Lorenzo!" Matteo shouted, his hands shaking as he stuffed stacks of ledger papers into an industrial shredder. "We have less than twelve hours before the Italian financial police execute the European arrest warrants!"

The heavy oak doors of the office did not open; they were blown off their hinges by a controlled explosive charge deployed by Marcus’s tactical team.

Lorenzo Moretti spun around, reaching into his desk drawer for a chrome pistol, but a single red laser dot appeared squarely between his eyes, freezing him in place.

Elena walked through the smoke, her long black coat fluttering behind her like a cape, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete floor. Alejandro stood half a step behind her, his hand resting on the lapel of his suit, his face an unreadable mask of cold power.

"Drop the pen, Lorenzo," Elena said, her voice completely calm, completely devoid of fear.

Lorenzo looked at the little maid his sister had kept in a vault, his jaw tightening with a bitter, aristocratic rage. "You have no standing in Italy, Elena Castillo. This is sovereign Moretti property."

"Not anymore," Arthur Pendelton said, stepping forward from behind the guards, holding a sealed document bearing the official seal of the High Court of Genoa. "Per the emergency cross-border maritime petition filed yesterday morning, the twenty percent share allocation illegally seized by your sister has been fully reinstated to the Castillo trust. Furthermore, because your family used these specific shipping lanes to launder the proceeds of federal kidnapping, the Italian government has authorized an immediate administrative takeover of Moretti Marittima by Castillo Logistics."

Elena walked to the massive desk, picked up the chrome pistol, and tossed it into the wastebasket with a soft, metallic thud. She sat down in the high-backed leather chair that Lorenzo had just vacated.

"The Moretti name is finished in this harbor, Lorenzo," Elena said, looking out the window at the massive container ships bearing her family's original emblem. "Get out of my chair."
