Chapter 28 - RECLAIMING THE QUIET

Forty-eight hours later.
The morning sun broke over the Pacific Ocean, casting a warm, golden light across the cliffside estate in Laguna Beach.
The dark gray SUV was gone. The press was gone. The corporate war that had briefly threatened to tear their lives apart had been extinguished completely, leaving behind only the peaceful sound of breaking waves against the rocks below.
On the wide wooden terrace, the family table was set once again for breakfast.
Freshly baked bread, fresh fruit, warm coffee, and orange juice covered the linen cloth.
Harper was sitting on a wooden bench, helping her grandmother Eleanor weave fresh lilies into a floral garland. David sat in a comfortable rocking chair, reading the morning paper with a peaceful smile, completely unbothered by the corporate headlines mentioning his family's total victory.
In the kitchen, Jake stood near the stove, flipping homemade pancakes on a cast-iron skillet. He wore a simple white linen shirt and worn jeans, barefoot against the hardwood floor.
Emily walked up behind him, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, resting her cheek against his broad back.
"They're talking about Julian on the news," Emily whispered, her voice filled with quiet amusement. "They're calling him the 'New Titan of Wall Street.'"
Jake chuckled, a warm, deep vibration that relaxed Emily’s entire body. He set the spatula down, turning around in her arms, pulling her close against his chest.
"Julian will do great," Jake said, resting his chin on top of her dark hair. "He’s got Mom and Dad’s moral compass, and he knows when to walk away from a bad deal."
Jake cupped Emily’s face in his hands, gently tracing the soft line of her jaw with his thumb.
"How are you holding up, my love?" Jake asked softly, his gray-blue eyes filled with intense, tender concern. "New York... the court... the rain... I know it brought back terrible memories."
Emily looked up into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had stood like an iron shield between her and the world, the man who had surrendered billions without a second thought just to keep her safe.
"I wasn't scared for a single second, Jake," Emily answered truthfully, her voice rich with unwavering love. "Because three years ago, I fell in love with a man who thought he had to carry the whole world on his shoulders. But this week... I saw a man who knows exactly what his world is."
She reached up, touching his unpolished gold ring.

"Your world is right here," Emily whispered softly.
"Always," Jake promised, bending down to press his lips to hers in a slow, deep, reverent kiss that tasted of ocean wind and sweet surrender.
