Chapter 22 - THE RETURN TO NEW YORK

The private jet sliced through the heavy gray clouds over Manhattan, descending toward Teterboro Airport at seven o'clock the following morning.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was taut. Eleanor and David had stayed behind in Laguna Beach with Julian to protect Harper and Ethan, surrounded by an elite private security detail Jake had rehired within two hours of Arthur Sterling’s arrival.

Jake sat across from Emily at the leather work table. Spread out between them were financial ledgers, corporate filings, and court filings running hundreds of pages deep.

Jake wore a crisp black suit, tailored to perfection—his former armor. But unlike the cold, arrogant executive who had worn such suits years ago, his eyes were grounded, reflecting the deep, unshakable love he held for his wife sitting across from him.

"Look at these transactions," Emily pointed out, her pen tracing a series of offshore transfers dated six years prior. "These bear your digital signature, Jake. But look at the timestamp. November 14th, 2020."

Jake looked closely at the document. "November 14th... I was in Munich negotiating the logistics acquisition. I was out of the country, off the grid for thirty-six hours during final contract sign-offs."

"Someone inside Vance International used your master key to execute those transfers," Emily deduced, her sharp analytical mind working at full speed. "They laid the foundation for this trap years ago, waiting for the exact moment you dropped your guard."

"It wasn't just someone inside," Jake said softly, looking up at the gray skyline of New York appearing outside the oval window. "It was someone who had access to my personal vault. Only three people had that key."

"Who?" Emily asked.

"My former Chief Legal Counsel, Richard Hayes," Jake answered, his voice dropping an octave. "And my late uncle’s estate executor, Marcus Croft."

"That's only two," Emily noted.

Jake met her gaze. "The third person was my ex-fiancée, Victoria Sterling."

Emily’s eyes widened slightly. She looked at the portfolio Arthur Sterling had delivered the night before. Sterling Global Investments.

"Arthur Sterling isn't just an informant," Emily realized. "He's Victoria’s uncle."

"He came to Laguna Beach not to save us," Jake said, a dark, calculating smile touching his lips for the first time in three years. "He came to see if I was still weak, if three years of peace had made me soft. He wanted to see if I would panic."

The jet tires touched down on the tarmac with a sharp screech.

Jake reached across the table, taking Emily’s hand. He ran his thumb over the unpolished gold band on her ring finger, matching his own.

"Are you ready for this, Em?" Jake asked softly. "Once we step out of this plane, the press, the lawyers, and the corporate vultures will come at us with everything they have."

May you like

Emily squeezed his hand tightly, her gray-blue eyes flashing with fierce, unwavering devotion.

"Let them come," Emily said firmly. "They think you're fighting for a corporate empire, Jake. They don't realize you're fighting for your family. And that makes you dangerous."
