Chapter 25 - INTO THE VAULT

At 6:00 PM, a torrential downpour lashed against the cobblestone streets of the Financial District.
The abandoned building on Wall Street stood dark and silent, its grand granite pillars slick with rain. Yellow caution tape fluttered against the rusted iron gates.
A black van pulled into the alleyway behind the building.
Jake stepped out into the rain wearing a heavy dark jacket and work boots. Emily followed close behind, holding an industrial lantern and a heavy-duty diagnostic tablet. Beside them was Julian, who had flown in secretly from California two hours ago, bringing specialized electronic recovery gear.
"Security cameras on the perimeter are looped, Jake," Julian reported, checking his handheld device. "We have forty-five minutes before the private patrol makes its next sweep."
"That's more than enough time," Jake said, using a crowbar to pry open a heavy steel maintenance door near the basement level.
The heavy door gave way with a screech of rusty metal.
They stepped inside, the beam of their lanterns cutting through thick, suffocating dust that had lain undisturbed for years. They descended a narrow concrete staircase, down past three subterranean levels, until they reached the massive, circular steel door of the ancient Vance Private Vault.
The vault door was six feet thick, its heavy mechanical combination wheel locked in place with a heavy iron padlock.
"The lock was changed when the building sold," Julian observed, shining his light on the shiny new deadbolt.
Jake stepped forward, taking the crowbar in his large hands. With a single, explosive burst of physical power, he drove the steel bar into the mechanism, leveraging his weight against the frame.
The lock snapped with a loud bang, echoing down the dark concrete corridor!
Jake grabbed the heavy steel wheel, turning it clockwise with steady, powerful thrusts. Deep inside the door, ancient brass gears groaned, unlocked, and clicked into place.
With a heavy push, the six-ton vault door swung open.
Inside, rows of metal safety deposit boxes and dark server racks sat silent in the cold air.
Emily immediately rushed toward the primary server rack in the back corner. She hooked her diagnostic tablet directly into the master bus port, her fingers flying across the touch screen.
"It still has emergency battery power!" Emily gasped, watching lines of green code boot up across her screen. "System logs... archived directories... November 2020."
Jake stood guard at the vault door, watching the dark corridor while Julian monitored the security feeds.
"Did you find it, Em?" Jake asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"I found it," Emily whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of shock and triumph. "Jake... it wasn't just Victoria or Richard. Look at the IP address that authorized the key duplication."
Jake walked over to her side, looking down at the tablet screen.
The IP address was registered to an internal workstation inside Vance International.
The user tag reading across the audit log read: STERLING_A – ARTHUR STERLING.

"Arthur wasn't helping Victoria," Emily realized, looking up at Jake in horror. "Arthur set Victoria up, too! He used her personal capital to buy Solstice, framed you for the historical fraud, and planned to let Victoria take the fall so he could absorb both Vance International and Sterling Global under his private control!"
Before Jake could speak, the echo of heavy footsteps clattered down the concrete stairs outside the vault.
