Chapter 26 - CORNERED IN THE DARK

The bright, blinding beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness of the subterranean corridor.

Three men in dark raincoats stepped into the vault entrance. Standing in the center was Arthur Sterling, holding an umbrella in one hand and a sleek black leather document case in the other.

"I must admit, Jake," Arthur said, his voice echoing smoothly against the reinforced steel walls, "your persistence is truly remarkable. I didn't think you still had the appetite for basement raids."

Jake stepped smoothly in front of Emily and Julian, shielding them with his broad frame.

"You played your own niece, Arthur," Jake said coldly, his voice steady as bedrock. "You used her greed to fund your takeover, and you left a digital trail right here in this vault."

Arthur laughed softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Victoria is ambitious, but she lacks vision. She thought Vance International was worth two billion dollars. She didn't realize that the proprietary logistics patents your father buried in the foundation's trust are worth fifty billion to the European defense sector."

Arthur gestured subtly to the two armed private security guards standing behind him.

"You see, Jake," Arthur continued smoothly, "it doesn't matter what you found on that server. In twenty minutes, this building is scheduled for an emergency structural demolition inspection. A gas line leak will be reported in this basement. An tragic accident... involving a retired executive and his ambitious wife."

Emily felt a chill run down her spine, but her grip on Jake’s waist remained firm. She didn't tremble. She looked at Arthur with absolute, fearless disgust.

"You really think you can execute a murder on Wall Street, Arthur?" Emily challenged sharply. "You think no one knows we're here?"

"No one knows, Mrs. Vance," Arthur smiled thinly. "Your security detail in California thinks you're at the hotel. The court believes you're preparing your surrender papers. You are completely alone."

"She's not alone," Jake said softly.

Jake reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, unobtrusive black device no larger than a key fob. He pressed the central button.

A high-pitched acoustic chirp echoed through the vault.

Instantly, the heavy steel security grates at the far end of the corridor slammed down with a deafening crash!

Red emergency lights flashed to life across the ceiling, casting a dramatic, crimson glow over the dark vault!

From the shadows behind Arthur Sterling, three uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Corporate Fraud Division stepped out, their sidearms raised and aimed directly at Arthur’s chest!

"Arthur Sterling!" the lead FBI agent announced loudly. "Drop the briefcase and put your hands on your head! You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, corporate espionage, and attempted extortion!"

Arthur’s umbrella slipped from his hand, clattering against the wet concrete floor. His face turned gray with absolute terror as he realized the trap had just snapped shut around his own neck.

Jake looked down at Arthur, his gray-blue eyes cold and unyielding.

"I didn't come to New York to fight you in a courtroom, Arthur," Jake said quietly. "I came to deliver you to the authorities."
