Chapter 27 - THE TIDE TURNS

By midnight, the news of Arthur Sterling’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the global financial markets.

The Wall Street Journal published a late-night special edition: STERLING GLOBAL CEO ARRESTED IN MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FRAUD CONSPIRACY; JAKE VANCE EXONERATED.

Inside the federal courthouse on Foley Square, the emergency hearing was reconvened at 1:00 AM.

Judge Miller presided over the empty, silent courtroom, reviewing the physical server logs and the FBI arrest reports presented by Sarah Lin and Emily Vance.

Victoria Sterling sat at the defense table, her face pale, her hands shaking as her own legal team informed her that her personal assets were locked due to her involvement in Solstice Holdings' fraudulent loan applications.

"In light of the overwhelming evidence presented by the defense," Judge Miller announced, slamming his gavel against the wooden block, "this court immediately vacates the freeze order on the Vance Family Trust. All assets, operational rights, and corporate accounts are restored to Jake Vance and Emily Vance without prejudice."

Judge Miller turned his gaze toward Victoria Sterling.

"Furthermore," the judge added sternly, "a temporary restraining order is issued against Victoria Sterling and her associates, prohibiting any contact or proximity to the Vance family or their properties."

The gavel struck once more.

Case closed.

Victoria stood frozen at her table as her attorneys rushed her out through a side exit to avoid the press waiting outside.

Jake and Emily stood together near the plaintiff’s table.

Sarah Lin packed her leather briefcase, looking at Jake with deep professional admiration. "That was the fastest, most decisive takedown of a corporate raid I've seen in twenty years, Jake. You could take back the CEO chair at Vance International tomorrow morning. The board would vote ninety percent in your favor."

Jake looked at the heavy oak doors of the courtroom. He looked at the polished marble floor. He remembered the years he had spent in rooms like this—stressed, angry, hungry for power, sacrificing his health, his peace, and his heart for numbers on a balance sheet.

Then he looked at Emily.

He looked at her dark hair, her bright, beautiful eyes, and the simple, unpolished gold band resting on her left ring finger.

Jake took Emily’s hand in his, kissing her palm softly.

"Offer the CEO position to Julian," Jake said calmly to Sarah Lin. "He’s smart, he’s honest, and he knows how to run the firm with integrity. My work here is done."

Sarah blinked in surprise, then smiled warmly. "You really are done with it, aren't you?"

"I was done three years ago, Sarah," Jake smiled gently. "Tonight was just taking out the trash."
