Chapter 24 - THE TIGHTENING NET

By two o'clock that afternoon, the battle had shifted from the boardroom to the high-stakes legal chambers of the Manhattan Federal District Court.

Inside the private conference room adjacent to Courtroom 4B, Jake and Emily sat with their lead defense attorney, Sarah Lin—a formidable, brilliant litigator who had represented Jake during his early corporate battles.

"Emily’s audit gave us a massive leverage point, Jake," Sarah explained, tapping her tablet screen. "By proving that Solstice Holdings was funded using Victoria's personal assets, we can argue in front of Judge Miller that this entire fraud allegation is a bad-faith hostile takeover attempt rather than a legitimate regulatory action."

"What about the forged transfers from six years ago?" Jake asked, his mind focused entirely on eliminating any threat to his family’s peace.

"That's where things get tricky," Sarah admitted, her expression turning serious. "The digital signature matches your master encrypted key. Unless we can physically produce the hardware drive that executed those transfers on November 14th, 2020, the judge will have no choice but to keep the freeze on your family trust."

Emily tapped her chin thoughtfully, looking at the court filings. "The hardware drive... Jake, where was your primary backup server kept before you liquidated the old office?"

Jake paused, his memories flashing back to the dark, stressful days before he had walked away from the corporate world.

"It was in the subterranean vault at the old Vance Private Bank on Wall Street," Jake said slowly. "The building was sold two years ago to a commercial development firm."

"Did they demolish the vault?" Emily asked eagerly.

"No," Jake’s eyes lit up with realization. "The vault was reinforced historical steel from 1920. It was built into the bedrock. They couldn't remove it without compromising the building's structural foundation. They sealed it."

"Then the server is still down there," Emily whispered, excitement rising in her chest. "The original server logs from November 2020 are sitting inside that sealed vault."

Suddenly, the conference room door burst open.

Arthur Sterling stepped inside, accompanied by two federal marshals. His face was devoid of the polite demeanor he had displayed in Laguna Beach.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Arthur declared coldly. "Judge Miller has just signed an emergency order. The court has granted Solstice Holdings temporary receivership over all Vance International digital assets, effective immediately."

Arthur smiled a thin, vicious smile.

"Which means," Arthur added, "you have thirty minutes to clear your belongings from Vance Tower before federal marshals seal the building."

Jake stood up slowly, stepping between Arthur Sterling and Emily. He didn't look defeated. In fact, his clear, peaceful eyes held a terrifying, iron certainty.

"Enjoy the next thirty minutes, Arthur," Jake said softly. "Because by sunset, your entire family empire is going to collapse."
