Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Docks

The final confrontation did not happen in the mansion, but at Port Newark, where the bulk of the Moretti shipping assets were managed.

At midnight, three of the senior captains loyal to Victor tried to seize the cargo manifests from the main office. They were met not by Victor, but by Lucas, who was waiting for them in the dark warehouse with thirty heavily armed men.

The struggle was brief, violent, and absolute.

By 2:00 AM, the last of the corrupt captains had surrendered their weapons, realizing that Victor’s promises of a coup had been nothing but smoke. The Moretti family had been purged of its rot, not from the outside, but from the very top.

Lucas stood on the edge of the dock, the cold wind from the harbor whipping his coat around his legs.

He looked out over the dark water, where the cargo ships were slowly coming into harbor. For the first time in three years, the weight on his chest did not feel like a suffocating hand. The air came easily.

“It’s done, boss,” Marcus said, stepping up beside him. “The ports are secure. The transition to the legal holding company is complete. By Monday, the Moretti name will no longer exist in the NYPD files.”

“Good,” Lucas said, turning back toward his car. “I have a piano lesson to attend.”
