Chapter 4 - The Threat Draws Near

Despite Lucas's attempts to keep the threat at bay, Marcus was a master of psychological warfare. Over the next week, the subtle signs of invasion began to mount.
First, it was a toy—a small, wooden sailboat identical to one Lily had lost months ago—left sitting on the edge of the swimming pool. Then, the mansion’s state-of-the-art security cameras experienced a five-minute blackout at exactly 3:00 AM three nights in a row.
Lucas was losing his mind. He reinstated the armed guards, but this time, he ordered them to conceal their weapons and patrol the perimeter of the boxwood maze 24/7. The light, airy atmosphere of the Moretti estate evaporated, replaced by a suffocating paranoia.
Lily felt the shift immediately. One afternoon, she sat at the grand piano in the sunroom, her fingers resting listlessly on the keys. Barnaby the rabbit was tucked under her arm, but she wasn't playing.
"Why are those men in black suits standing by my swing set, Mommy?" Lily asked, her large, dark eyes filled with confusion. "Are they waiting for the bad men to come back?"
Sarah, sitting beside her, felt a pang of sharp grief in her chest. She looked out the window and saw two burly men in tactical gear scanning the treeline. The fortress had returned. The war was back inside.
"They're just... making sure the garden is safe for the flowers to grow, sweetie," Sarah lied, her heart aching.
She looked up to see Lucas standing in the doorway. He looked exhausted, shadows bruising the skin beneath his eyes. He hadn't slept in days, pacing the hallways like a caged predator.
"We can't live like this, Lucas," Sarah said after Lily had gone to her room to play. Her voice was resolute. "This isn't breathing. This is just waiting to die."
"I am protecting you!" Lucas snapped, his stress finally boiling over. "You don't know Marcus. You don't know what he's capable of. He doesn't just kill his enemies, Sarah. He breaks them. He takes everything they love and turns it to ash."

"Then let's run," Sarah said, grabbing his arms. "Let's leave the mansion. We don't need this big house, or the money, or the name. We just need each other."
"We can't run from him," Lucas said quietly, staring out at the darkening harbor. "He has eyes everywhere. The only way out is through."
