Chapter 6 - The Planted Poison

The following evening, a quiet panic rippled through the servants' quarters.

Victor had called an emergency meeting of the entire domestic staff in the main parlor. Lucas sat in a high-backed leather chair near the fireplace, his face dark and silent, while Victor stood in the center of the room like an inquisitor.

“We have found something very disturbing in the servants' wing,” Victor announced, his voice carrying a performative gravity. He held up a small, clear plastic bag containing a pressurized metal canister—the exact match of the one used to poison Lucas’s study inhaler.

Sarah, standing near the back of the room with Lily’s hand in hers, felt a cold dread settle in her stomach.

“This canister of Vespir-9 was found hidden behind a loose floorboard in the closet of the guest suite,” Victor said, his eyes scanning the crowd before locking directly onto Sarah. “The suite currently occupied by Sarah Carter and her daughter.”

A collective gasp went through the staff.

“No!” Sarah cried, stepping forward, her face flushed with panic. “That’s not mine! I’ve never seen that in my life! Mr. Moretti, please, you have to believe me! I don't even know what that is!”

“It’s the toxin that nearly killed Lucas,” Victor said, his voice cold and triumphant. “We ran a background check on you, Sarah. Or should I call you by your real name? Sarah Miller, whose husband was a driver for the Detroit syndicate before he was killed in a warehouse raid five years ago.”

The room went dead silent.

Sarah felt the walls closing in. “My husband was a mechanic! He didn't know who those men were! He was just fixing their cars! We had nothing to do with their business!”

“A convenient story,” Victor sneered, turning to Lucas. “Lucas, she’s a plant. The Detroit family sent her here to finish you. They used the child’s asthma as a cover to get her into the house with the poison. I’ve already prepared a transport to take her to our facility in Queens for proper interrogation.”

Lucas didn't move. He sat in his chair, his gray-blue eyes fixed on Sarah, who was sobbing now, her knees buckling as she held onto Lily.

“Mister,” Lily’s small voice broke through the crying. She stepped in front of her mother, her small body shaking but her eyes fierce as she stared at Lucas. “My mama didn't do it. She’s good. She makes the music.”

Lucas looked at Lily, then at Victor, and finally at the plastic bag in Victor’s hand.

A long, agonizing silence stretched across the parlor.

“Victor,” Lucas said, his voice quiet.

“Yes, Lucas?”

“Where did you say you found this?”

“In the guest suite wardrobe closet, behind the loose floorboard,” Victor said.

“That’s strange,” Lucas murmured, standing up slowly. He walked over to Victor, his massive frame towering over his consigliere. “Because I had the guest suite completely renovated last month. The floorboards are solid oak, tongue-and-groove, laid over reinforced concrete. There are no loose boards, Victor. And there are no closets in that suite—only open wardrobes built directly into the stone walls.”

Victor’s face froze, a tiny bead of sweat appearing at his temple. “I… perhaps my men misidentified the room. It was likely the old servants' quarters where they stayed the first night—”

“My men didn't find that canister, Victor,” Lucas said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register. “Because my men have had you under twenty-four-hour surveillance since Tuesday. We watched you enter the east wing guest suite this afternoon while Sarah was in the kitchen. We watched you place that canister in her room through the security feed I redirected to my private tablet.”

The parlor erupted into chaotic whispers. The guards at the doors instantly raised their weapons, but they didn't point them at Sarah.

They pointed them at Victor.
