Chapter 1 - The Breath of Life and Death

The marble of the second-floor landing was cold enough to sap the warmth from Lily’s bare feet, but she barely felt it. All her focus was locked on the giant of a man convulsing at her knees.

Lucas Moretti, a man whose name was whispered in the corridors of power like a curse, was flat on his back, his chest heaving as the medication from Lily’s cheap, generic plastic inhaler fought the invisible hand choking his lungs.

“Mister?” Lily whispered again, her small hand trembling as she held her stuffed rabbit, Barnaby, tightly against her ribs. “Is the air coming back?”

Lucas did not answer with words. His large fingers, scarred and calloused, twitched on the marble, eventually rising to touch his own throat. He drew in a long, ragged, whistling breath that sounded like wind tearing through a ruined building. His gray-blue eyes, glassy and bloodshot, slowly focused on her. There was no rage in them yet—only the raw, animal shock of a predator that had nearly been snuffed out by a shadow.

“Lily!”

The scream shattered the silence of the grand staircase.

Sarah Carter, the newly hired third-shift maid, came flying around the banister. Her hair was falling out of its neat bun, her simple grey uniform wrinkled, and her face completely drained of color. Behind her came the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots. Three of Lucas’s personal security detail, led by his right-hand man and lifelong friend, Victor Rossi, crested the stairs with guns drawn.

Sarah threw herself onto the floor, skidding on her knees to wrap her arms around Lily, pulling her back. “Lily! Oh my god, Lily, what did you do? I’m sorry, Mr. Moretti! Please, she’s just a child, she didn’t touch anything, I swear to God she didn’t—”

“Get her away from him!” Victor roared.

Victor was a tall, sharply dressed man with silver-threaded hair and eyes that had always reminded Lily of a snake waiting in the garden. He grabbed Sarah by the shoulder, dragging her backward, while another guard stepped between Lucas and the little girl, his hand resting heavily on his holster.

“Wait,” Lucas croaked.

The word was barely a vibration in his throat, but it acted like an physical barrier. The guards froze. Victor’s grip on Sarah’s shoulder tightened for a fraction of a second before he let go, his face instantly smoothing into an expression of deep, frantic concern.

“Lucas,” Victor said, kneeling beside the billionaire. “Don't try to speak. The ambulance is on the way. We found your primary inhaler shattered in the study downstairs. We thought you had an attack there and tried to make it to your room.”

Lucas didn't look at Victor. His gray-blue eyes remained fixed on Lily, who was hiding her face in her mother's neck. He looked at the tiny, purple plastic tube lying on the marble floor between them. It was empty now. The final dose had been spent.

“She…” Lucas swallowed hard, his throat clicking. “She saved me.”

Victor’s eyes flicked to Lily. In the dim, ambient light of the hallway, a flash of pure, unadulterated hatred crossed his features, so quick and cold that only Sarah, clutching her daughter to her chest, caught the edge of it.

“A maid’s brat with a toy,” Victor muttered, his voice smooth but tight. “We don't know what was in that inhaler, Lucas. It could have been contaminated. We need to get you to the private clinic immediately. Marcus, clear the cars. Now!”

The guards sprang into action, lifting Lucas from the floor. As they bore him away, Lucas kept his head turned, his gaze locked on Lily until they vanished down the grand staircase.

Sarah held Lily so tight the little girl could hear her mother’s heart hammering like a trapped bird.

“We have to pack,” Sarah whispered, her voice shaking as she looked at the dark, empty corridor. “We have to leave before they realize what really happened tonight.”
