Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

The summer sun warmed the Long Island harbor, turning the water into a sheet of glittering diamonds.

The Moretti mansion was quiet, but it was a quiet born of absolute peace. The armed guards were gone, replaced by the gentle breeze rustling through the open windows. The heavy iron gates stood wide open, welcoming the world.

Lily ran through the high boxwood maze, her pink sneakers flashing in the sun as she chased a blue butterfly. Her breathing was deep, clear, and easy. She didn't have her inhaler, and she didn't need to look over her shoulder.

Sarah sat on the bench near the weeping woman fountain, a brand-new book of sheet music in her lap, her face peaceful and bright.

Lucas walked out of the conservatory, carrying a tray with two tall glasses of fresh lemonade and a small cup of apple juice. He set the tray on the stone table, sitting beside Sarah on the bench.

"She’s getting fast," Lucas smiled, watching Lily circle the fountain, her laughter echoing through the garden.

"She is," Sarah said, leaning her head against his shoulder. His arm came around her, warm, solid, and free of the weight of the past. "Sometimes I still think I’m going to wake up in Bridgeport."

"That apartment is gone, Sarah," Lucas said, kissing her temple. "And so is the monster who lived in this fortress. We’ve built something real."

Lily ran up to the bench, panting slightly, her cheeks flushed with a healthy, pink glow. She picked up her cup of apple juice, taking a long sip before looking up at Lucas with her large, dark eyes.

"Mr. Lucas?"

"Yes, Lily?"

"Are we going to play the piano today?"

Lucas laughed, reaching down to lift her onto his lap beside her mother. "Only if you teach me how to stay inside the lines this time."

"Okay!" Lily giggled, hugging her stuffed rabbit, Barnaby, tightly. "But you have to promise to use the pretty blue color."

May you like

"I promise," Lucas said.

As the sun began to set over the harbor, casting a warm, golden light across the garden, the sound of the piano began to play from the sunroom once more—soft, clear, and beautiful, carrying the promise of a family that had finally learned how to breathe together.
