Chapter 7 - The Trap Cleared

Victor’s hand instinctively drifted toward his jacket pocket, but before his fingers could brush the leather of his holster, the click of three semi-automatic pistols echoing through the parlor froze him in place.
“Don't,” Lucas whispered, stepping so close to Victor that the consigliere could see the cold fire burning in his gray-blue eyes. “I wanted to give you a chance, Victor. I wanted to see if there was any shred of the brother I grew up with left inside you. But you’re just a parasite.”
Victor let out a low, bitter chuckle, his mask of professionalism slipping away completely. “A parasite? I built this family, Lucas! Your father was a tyrant, and you… you wanted to throw it all away for a schoolteacher and a kid! I did what had to be done to save the Moretti name!”
“You killed Isabella,” Lucas said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion but heavy with a promise of death. “You killed Daniel.”
“They were weak!” Victor spat, his face twisting with rage. “Just like you’re being weak now! You think these men will follow you when they find out you’re going to sell the ports? You think they’re going to let a cleaning girl and her brat run this mansion?”
“They’re not running the mansion, Victor,” Lucas said, turning his back on him. “I am. Marcus, take him to the basement. And ensure he stays comfortable until I’ve cleared the rest of his associates from the ports.”
As the guards dragged Victor out of the room, his curses echoing down the hall, Lucas walked over to Sarah. He knelt down, gently lifting Lily into his arms.
“I’m sorry, Sarah,” Lucas said, his voice soft, almost unrecognizable from the man who had just ordered his closest friend’s execution. “I had to let him play his hand so we could catch him in the act. You and Lily were never in any real danger.”
Sarah wiped her tears, her chest still heaving with residual panic. “Is it over, Mr. Moretti? Are we safe now?”

Lucas looked at the little girl in his arms, who had wrapped her small fingers around his lapel.
“Almost,” Lucas said. “But first, we have to finish the song.”
