Chapter 6 - CLAIRE’S FIRST MOVE

Claire did not want Vale Industries.
That was what nobody understood.
Charles assumed she wanted control.
Victoria feared she wanted revenge.
Richard suspected she might restructure the company.
Adrian probably imagined her sitting in Washington plotting his destruction.
Claire wanted one thing.
Noah’s future to stop depending on people who confused money with love.
At 6:30 the following morning, Claire entered Whitmore Global’s Washington office.
She had not been inside since she was twenty-four.
Employees turned discreetly as she walked past.
Some recognized her.
Most knew the name.
Charles had announced nothing publicly, but financial media already noticed the trust transfer.
Claire Whitmore Vale was suddenly worth far more than the world had assumed.
Miriam joined her inside a conference room.
“They found Savannah’s rental car.”
“Where?”
“El Centro.”
“Savannah?”
“Gone.”
“Daniel?”
“Gone.”
Claire sighed.
“And Adrian?”
“Still in California.”
“Has he contacted Noah?”
“Three times.”
Claire looked at her phone.
She had seen the calls.
She had not blocked Adrian.
That mattered.
He had every right to speak to his son.
But Noah hadn’t wanted to answer.
“He asked me if Daddy was angry,” Claire said.
Miriam softened.
“What did you tell him?”
“That adults can be angry and still love their children.”
“Good answer.”
“It didn’t feel good.”
Nothing about this felt good.
Not the money.
Not the house.
Not seeing Adrian humiliated outside the mansion.
For years Claire had fantasized about leaving.
In those fantasies, freedom felt victorious.
In reality, it felt like walking through broken glass while carrying your child.
Miriam opened a folder.
“Custody hearing is Monday.”
Claire nodded.
“Adrian’s lawyers want emergency return of Noah to California.”
“Expected.”
“They’ll argue California is his habitual residence.”
“He has been there his whole life.”
“Yes.”
“So?”
“So we shouldn’t pretend that part is easy.”
Claire appreciated Miriam for that.
No false promises.
“Can they force me back?”
“They could order Noah returned temporarily while jurisdiction is determined.”
Claire looked out the window.
“That means Adrian wins.”
“No.”
Miriam shook her head.
“Custody isn’t a scoreboard.”
“He’ll treat it like one.”
“Then let him.”
Miriam turned a page.
“We have evidence you were Noah’s primary caregiver.”
“That’s obvious.”
“Obvious doesn’t matter. Documents do.”
School pickups.
Pediatric appointments.
Preschool records.
Travel schedules.
Adrian had missed almost everything.
Claire hated that those absences now helped her.
Miriam continued.
“We also need to decide whether to use Savannah.”
Claire looked back.
“What do you mean?”
“Adrian brought Noah around her twice.”
Claire remembered.
A “company picnic.”
A yacht event.
Savannah had been introduced as a colleague.
“Not enough.”
“Agreed.”
“I don’t want the court thinking I’m punishing him for cheating.”
“Good.”
Claire sat.
“There is something else.”
Miriam slid over a copy of the succession agreement.
Claire stared at it.
Her mother’s signature sat on page forty-two.
“What about it?”
“Charles thinks we should exercise the emergency voting clause.”
“No.”
“Claire—”
“No.”
“Victoria financed the people who penetrated company systems.”
“We don’t know if she intended that.”
“She created the risk.”
“Then investigate her.”
Miriam studied her.
“You’re protecting them.”
“No.”
“Then what are you doing?”
Claire looked down at the agreement.
“I’m trying not to become them.”
Silence.
“If I take control because I’m angry at Adrian, I’m exactly what he says I am.”
“What does he say you are?”
“A woman using family money to destroy him.”
Miriam leaned forward.
“Claire, having power and using power responsibly are not the same as refusing power.”
The sentence stayed with her.
Before Claire could answer, Charles entered.
“You need to see CNBC.”
He activated the screen.
A financial anchor spoke over a photograph of Adrian.
VALE INDUSTRIES SHARES FALL 11% AMID DATA LEAK INVESTIGATION
Another headline appeared.
CEO ADRIAN VALE FACES BOARD SCRUTINY
Then:
MYSTERY HEIRESS WIFE EMERGES AS MAJOR SHAREHOLDER
Claire groaned.
“Mystery heiress?”
Charles smiled.
“Better than powerless housewife.”
“I hate both.”
Her phone vibrated.
Adrian.
Again.
This time she answered.
“Hello.”
His voice was quieter than usual.
“Can I speak to Noah?”
“He’s at the museum with Uncle Charles’s driver.”
“I’ll call later.”
“Okay.”
He didn’t hang up.
Claire waited.
Finally Adrian said,
“My mother hired Daniel Reed.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“How?”
“Records.”
“She says she didn’t know what he was doing.”
“Maybe she didn’t.”
“You believe her?”
“I said maybe.”
Adrian exhaled.
“She told me about Noah.”
Claire went still.
“What about Noah?”
“The succession rights.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course Victoria told him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since my birthday.”
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You inherited control of my company and didn’t mention it.”
“It isn’t your company.”
Silence.
Claire regretted the sharpness immediately.
Then decided she didn’t.
Adrian said,
“You sound different.”
“I am different.”
“No. I think you were always like this.”
Claire said nothing.
“Maybe I just never listened long enough to notice.”
That surprised her.
For a brief moment she saw the man she had married.
Then he ruined it.
“I need you to bring Noah back.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“No.”
“Claire.”
“We’ll follow the court.”
“He belongs in California.”
“He belongs where he is safe and cared for.”
“With me.”
“You barely know his preschool teacher’s name.”
“That doesn’t mean I don’t love him.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice softened.
“It doesn’t.”
Adrian went quiet.
“I do love him.”
“Then start acting like love is something you do, not something you own.”
She ended the call.
Miriam watched her.
“Was that satisfying?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Claire almost smiled.
Then Charles’s assistant entered.
“Ms. Whitmore?”
“Yes?”
“There’s a visitor downstairs.”
“Who?”
The assistant hesitated.
“She says her name is Savannah Reed.”
Every person in the room froze.
Claire stood.
“That’s impossible.”
“She asked specifically for you.”
Miriam immediately reached for security.
Charles shook his head.
“Wait.”
Claire stared toward the door.
“Is she alone?”
“As far as security can tell.”
“Did she say what she wants?”
The assistant nodded.
“She said she has evidence that can keep Claire’s son alive.”
The room went silent.
Claire’s entire body changed.
“Bring her upstairs.”
Miriam grabbed Claire’s arm.
“Absolutely not.”
“She mentioned Noah.”
“That’s exactly why not.”
Claire looked at Charles.
He had already pressed the security button on his phone.
“Armed protection in the hallway,” he said.
Claire nodded.
“Bring her.”
Three minutes later Savannah Reed entered.
No designer clothes.
No makeup.
No glamorous confidence.
There was dried blood near her hairline.
Claire stared at the woman who had slept with her husband for almost a year.
Savannah stared back.
Then she placed a flash drive on the table.
“Daniel was never after Adrian.”
Claire’s voice was cold.
“Then who?”
Savannah looked directly at her.
“Noah.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Savannah continued.
“Your son isn’t just an heir.”
She pushed the flash drive closer.
“He’s the only person who can prove what happened to your mother.”
Claire felt every hair on her arms rise.
“My mother died of cancer.”
Savannah shook her head.
“No.”
Charles stood.
May you like
Savannah whispered,
“Your mother was murdered.”
