Chapter 14 - THE SECRET SON

His name was Julian Vale.
Forty-three years old.
Older than Adrian.
Richard’s son from a relationship before he married Victoria.
Unlike Ethan, Julian had never been hidden accidentally.
He had been hidden deliberately.
Richard found him fifteen years earlier.
Paid him quietly.
Bought him property.
Funded businesses.
Never introduced him to Adrian.
Never told Claire.
Never acknowledged him publicly.
“Why?” Adrian asked.
Richard sat across the room.
“Victoria threatened to expose things.”
“What things?”
“Thomas.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Richard continued.
“If I acknowledged Julian, she said she would destroy him.”
“So you paid him to stay invisible.”
“I tried to protect him.”
“Everyone in this family calls cowardice protection.”
Richard flinched.
Claire stayed silent.
This was Adrian’s pain.
He deserved to own it.
Adrian asked,
“Did Julian know?”
“Some.”
“Did he know about me?”
“Yes.”
“Did he hate me?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Sometimes.”
“Good.”
Richard looked up.
“Why good?”
“Because at least someone’s reaction makes sense.”
Claire almost smiled.
Richard didn’t.
“Where is he?”
“Seattle.”
“Call him.”
Richard hesitated.
“Now.”
Richard called.
Julian answered on the third ring.
“Richard.”
Adrian’s face changed hearing his half-brother use their father’s first name.
Richard said,
“Julian, Adrian knows.”
Silence.
Then:
“Took long enough.”
Adrian leaned toward the speaker.
“Hello, brother.”
Julian laughed softly.
“You sound exactly like television.”
“Apparently my life is television now.”
Claire looked away.
Julian asked,
“Why are you calling?”
“Victoria prepared to name you successor.”
Silence.
“What?”
Richard explained.
The trust activation.
The bloodline challenge.
Adrian’s potential removal.
Julian went quiet.
Then:
“I told her no.”
Everyone froze.
“You spoke to Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
Richard looked stunned.
“She came to Seattle.”
Adrian said,
“What did she want?”
“To make me CEO.”
“Why?”
“She said you were destroying the company.”
Adrian nodded bitterly.
“Not completely wrong.”
“She also said Claire would eventually take control.”
Claire raised an eyebrow.
Julian continued.
“I told Victoria I wanted nothing from the Vales.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because I watched what wanting it did to all of you.”
No one spoke.
Claire liked him immediately.
Adrian almost did too.
“Did you know Daniel Reed?”
“No.”
“Martin Keene?”
“Yes.”
Everyone looked up.
“How?”
“He contacted me on Victoria’s behalf.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
“What did he ask?”
“For DNA.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Did you give it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because normal families don’t send investigators to request saliva.”
Adrian laughed despite himself.
Julian continued.
“Listen. There’s something else.”
Of course there was.
“What?”
“Victoria said if I refused, she had another way to remove you.”
“The DNA statement?”
“Maybe.”
“She said Claire would lose Noah.”
Claire’s blood went cold.
“What?”
Adrian grabbed the phone.
“Explain.”
Julian hesitated.
“She believed if Claire controlled the Whitmore shares through Noah’s succession rights, the easiest solution was to challenge Claire’s fitness as a mother.”
Claire stood.
“How?”
“She didn’t say.”
Miriam and Charles exchanged looks.
Claire felt rage rising.
All the surveillance.
The school records.
The photographs.
Phase Two.
It had started before Daniel’s independent extortion.
Victoria wasn’t merely protecting company control.
She had been preparing a custody attack.
Adrian’s voice became ice.
“My mother was going to use my son.”
“Yes.”
Julian continued.
“I told Richard nothing because I wanted no part of it.”
Richard whispered,
“You should have told me.”
Julian laughed.
“That’s rich.”
Richard went quiet.
“You knew I existed for fifteen years and told nobody.”
Fair.
Adrian asked,
“Will you come to Washington?”
“Why?”
“Because this family is collapsing.”
“That sounds like a reason to stay in Seattle.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“Please.”
Silence.
Claire watched Adrian.
He rarely said that word.
Julian heard it too.
“I’ll come.”
The call ended.
That evening Claire received news from prosecutors.
Victoria would face charges related to Thomas’s death, obstruction, financial crimes, and possible interference with Evelyn’s medical care.
Richard could face charges for concealment.
Martin Keene had agreed to cooperate.
Savannah was negotiating a plea.
Daniel remained missing.
Then the board called.
Vale Industries could not remain leaderless.
Interim CEO appointment required.
Claire assumed Richard would recommend an experienced executive.
Instead Richard nominated her.
Claire stared at the screen.
“No.”
Adrian looked surprised.
“You’re refusing?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don’t want your job.”
“Former job.”
She looked at him.
He shrugged.
“Trying to be accurate.”
Richard said,
“Claire, shareholders trust the Whitmore name.”
“I have no CEO experience.”
“You’ve served on nonprofit boards.”
“That is not the same.”
Charles spoke.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“She shouldn’t take it.”
Claire felt relief.
Then Charles continued.
“Not permanently.”
Her relief vanished.
“You need someone clean enough to stabilize the company for ninety days.”
“I have a child.”
“You also own twenty-nine percent.”
Adrian leaned back.
“She could do it.”
Claire stared.
“Whose side are you on?”
“No idea anymore.”
That almost made her laugh.
The board voted.
Nine in favor.
Two abstentions.
One against.
Claire Whitmore Vale became interim CEO.
The woman Adrian once told to stop worrying about “business things” now occupied his office.
When Claire arrived in California two days later, employees stood as she walked through the forty-second floor.
She hated that.
“Sit down, please.”
People slowly did.
Claire entered Adrian’s old office.
His photographs were still there.
Awards.
Magazine covers.
A framed picture of Noah.
Claire picked it up.
“You kept this here?”
Adrian stood in the doorway.
She turned.
“I thought your access was restricted.”
“It is. I came to collect personal things with security.”
Claire looked at the photo.
“You had pictures.”
“I wasn’t completely heartless.”
“No.”
She placed it into his box.
“Just unavailable.”
He accepted that.
Then he noticed Claire behind his desk.
“Looks better on you.”
“Don’t.”
“What?”
“Charm.”
He nodded.
“Right.”
He picked up the box.
At the door he stopped.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“I know this changes nothing about us.”
She waited.
“But I hope you save the company.”
“Why?”
“Because thousands of people work here.”
She looked at him.
That was not the answer old Adrian would have given.
Old Adrian would have said legacy.
Family.
Name.
Power.
Claire nodded.
“I’ll try.”
After he left, Claire opened the first file awaiting her signature.
It involved selling a nonessential subsidiary.
The buyer offered six hundred million dollars.
Claire recognized the buyer.
Whitmore Global.
Her uncle’s company.
She frowned.
Then she saw who had approved the proposal before her appointment.
Charles.
Claire called him.
“What are you doing?”
“Business.”
“You’re trying to buy Vale assets while we’re weak.”
“Yes.”
“You told me you were helping.”
“I am.”
“By stripping the company?”
“By consolidating valuable assets.”
Claire stared at the paperwork.
“Into your company.”
“Yes.”
Something cold entered her chest.
“Uncle Charles.”
“What?”
“Did you know my mother’s trust would destabilize Vale?”
Silence.
Claire stood.
“Did you?”
Charles answered carefully.
“Evelyn expected disruption.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Another silence.
Claire felt betrayed before he even answered.
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“Did you encourage the private shareholders to sell me their shares?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Victoria would panic?”
“I suspected.”
“Did you know about Daniel?”
“No.”
“Savannah?”
“No.”
“Thomas?”
“Some.”
Claire gripped the desk.
“Were you planning to acquire Vale Industries?”
Charles said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Claire whispered,
“My entire life is surrounded by people who think I’m a chess piece.”
“You’re not.”
“Then stop moving me.”
She hung up.
Seconds later her assistant entered.
“Ms. Vale?”
Claire looked up.
“Ms. Whitmore Vale,” she corrected automatically.
The assistant nodded.
“There’s someone here.”
“Who?”
A tall man entered.
Dark suit.
Gray at his temples.
Adrian’s eyes.
Richard’s jaw.
Julian Vale.
He looked around the office.
Then at Claire.
“So.”
He smiled faintly.
“You’re the woman who finally kicked my little brother out of his own house.”
Claire stared.
Julian extended a hand.
“I think we’re going to get along.”
May you like
But behind his smile, Claire sensed something she had learned never to ignore again.
A secret.
