Chapter 11 - THE FORTY-EIGHT-HOUR WAR

By noon, Vale Industries was fighting for survival on four fronts.

Federal investigation.

Media scandal.

Shareholder panic.

And a hostile legal claim that could shift control of the company before anyone fully understood what had happened.

Claire entered the emergency command room at Whitmore Global.

Adrian joined remotely from Baltimore.

Ethan sat with federal investigators.

Richard was hospitalized for observation.

Victoria was in federal custody.

Savannah had entered protective cooperation negotiations.

And Daniel Reed remained missing.

Miriam displayed the Delaware filing.

“If the assignment were legitimate, Reed Strategic Partners could claim Ethan’s succession rights.”

“It isn’t legitimate,” Ethan said.

“Proving that takes time.”

Adrian’s voice came through the screen.

“How much time?”

“Potentially months.”

“We don’t have months.”

“No.”

Claire studied the paperwork.

“What happens immediately?”

Miriam pointed.

“Keene requested a temporary restraining order preventing any major board action while ownership is disputed.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“So I can’t run the company, Claire can’t restructure it, and Ethan can’t exercise rights.”

“Correct.”

“Who benefits?”

Claire answered.

“Daniel.”

Miriam nodded.

“He has options positions that increase in value as Vale stock falls.”

Charles entered.

“Which means he doesn’t need to win the company.”

Claire looked at him.

“He needs chaos.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“He’s shorting us.”

Miriam nodded.

“Indirectly.”

Claire’s phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

She opened it.

YOU HAVE SOMETHING I WANT.

Another.

I HAVE SOMETHING YOU WANT.

Then a photograph.

Noah.

Claire’s heart stopped.

He was standing outside a Washington preschool.

The photograph was old.

Three months old.

But Claire didn’t know that immediately.

She stood so fast the chair fell.

“NOAH!”

Security rushed in.

Charles grabbed the phone.

“Call the safe house.”

Claire was already dialing.

The nanny answered.

Noah was safe.

Claire nearly collapsed.

Adrian’s voice came from the monitor.

“What happened?”

Claire showed the photograph.

His expression became murderous.

Daniel sent another message.

RELAX. HE’S SAFE. FOR NOW.

Adrian slammed his fist onto the table in Baltimore.

“Find him.”

Federal agents were already tracing.

Nothing.

Encrypted routing.

Disposable devices.

Then Daniel called.

Claire answered.

“What do you want?”

“Nice to finally speak.”

His voice was calm.

Claire hated him immediately.

“You go near my son and—”

“I won’t.”

“You photographed him.”

“Months ago.”

“You collected information.”

“For leverage.”

Claire’s hands shook.

“What do you want?”

“The succession agreement.”

“You can’t use it.”

“I don’t need to.”

“Then why?”

“Because it proves Victoria’s misconduct triggers total restructuring.”

“That helps Ethan and me.”

“Not if Ethan assigned his rights.”

“He didn’t.”

Daniel laughed.

“Courts decide that.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“You forged his signature.”

“Allegedly.”

“What do you want?”

“Original agreement. All copies. And Savannah.”

Adrian snapped through the speaker,

“You’re not getting either.”

Daniel paused.

“Adrian?”

“Yeah.”

“You sound different without the private jet.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Come say that in person.”

“No, thank you.”

Daniel laughed.

“I always wondered why Savannah found you attractive.”

“She didn’t.”

A pause.

That answer surprised Daniel.

Adrian continued.

“She found me useful. Just like you found her useful.”

Savannah, listening from another room, looked down.

Daniel’s voice chilled.

“Don’t pretend you’re a victim.”

“I’m not.”

Another surprise.

Adrian said,

“I cheated on my wife. I ignored my son. I handed Savannah access because I liked being admired.”

Claire looked toward the screen.

Adrian continued.

“That stupidity belongs to me.”

Daniel went silent.

“But what you did belongs to you.”

No one in the room moved.

For the first time Claire heard Adrian accept responsibility without adding but.

Daniel recovered.

“How touching.”

Claire intervened.

“You’re not getting Savannah.”

“Then Vale Industries dies.”

“You were planning to destroy it anyway.”

“No.”

Daniel’s tone changed.

“I want compensation.”

“For being fired after stealing?”

“I built Nexora’s strategy model.”

“And sold confidential information.”

“Companies steal labor every day.”

Claire didn’t argue ideology with extortionists.

“What number?”

Adrian stared at her through the screen.

Daniel replied,

“Seventy-five million.”

Charles laughed.

Daniel ignored him.

“Wire it and I withdraw the claim.”

Claire said,

“You don’t control Ethan’s rights.”

“Court filing says otherwise.”

“Then let court decide.”

Daniel went silent.

He expected fear.

Claire realized negotiation was his real weakness.

He believed everyone valued money and companies as much as he did.

Claire continued.

“If Vale collapses, my son still has forty-six million dollars.”

Adrian looked down.

Claire said,

“Charles has billions.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Ethan never had the company, so he loses nothing he currently possesses.”

Silence.

“And Adrian?”

She looked at the screen.

“He already lost his house, marriage, CEO authority, and probably his dignity.”

Adrian almost smiled despite himself.

Claire continued.

“You’re threatening people who can survive your threat.”

Daniel’s breathing changed.

There.

Anger.

“You think this is a game?”

“No.”

“I can destroy the Vale name.”

Claire replied,

“Victoria did that before you were born.”

Charles raised an eyebrow.

Adrian did smile this time.

Daniel hung up.

Miriam looked at Claire.

“That was either brilliant or extremely dangerous.”

“Probably both.”

Federal agents entered.

“We have movement.”

They traced a transaction Daniel initiated seconds after the call.

A cryptocurrency conversion.

Then a private aviation booking.

Destination: Nassau.

Departure from Richmond.

Adrian stood.

“He’s leaving.”

The agent nodded.

“We’re coordinating.”

Savannah appeared in the doorway.

“He won’t go to Nassau.”

Everyone turned.

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel hates islands.”

Claire stared.

Savannah continued.

“He gets seasick.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then why book it?”

“Decoy.”

“Where would he go?”

Savannah thought.

“If everything failed?”

She closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“Colorado.”

“Why?”

“His father owned a cabin outside Telluride.”

Federal agents moved.

Claire asked,

“Would Keene be with him?”

Savannah nodded.

“Probably.”

“And the forged documents?”

“With Keene.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

For the first time, they were thinking the same thing.

Find Keene.

Destroy the fraudulent assignment.

End Daniel’s legal leverage.

Federal authorities left to coordinate.

Claire sat again.

Adrian remained on screen.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“When this is over…”

She waited.

“I’ll agree to whatever temporary custody arrangement keeps Noah stable.”

Claire stared.

“That isn’t what your lawyers filed.”

“I’ll change it.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked tired.

“Because I realized I was asking for him to come back partly because I couldn’t handle you being the one who left.”

Claire said nothing.

He continued.

“That’s not a reason to move a four-year-old across the country again.”

Something inside Claire loosened.

Not forgiveness.

But perhaps the first brick removed from a wall.

“Thank you.”

Adrian nodded.

Then Ethan entered the screen behind him.

His face was pale.

“What happened?”

Ethan held a document.

“Federal investigators found this in Victoria’s files.”

He placed it before the camera.

It was a DNA report.

Claire leaned closer.

Noah Vale.

Ethan Cole.

Probability of biological relationship.

Adrian frowned.

“Of course they’re related.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Look at the classification.”

Claire read it.

Her blood went cold.

The report did not list Ethan as Noah’s cousin.

It listed him as:

POSSIBLE PATERNAL HALF-BROTHER.

The room went silent.

Adrian stared at the screen.

May you like

Claire stopped breathing.

And suddenly one final family secret threatened to destroy everything they thought they knew.
