Chapter 4 - SAVANNAH’S REAL HUSBAND

Savannah Reed did not return to her apartment.

By noon, she was driving east on Interstate 8 in a rented gray sedan.

Her phone was turned off.

Her designer handbag was gone.

Her diamond earrings were gone.

The woman Adrian knew as Savannah Reed had disappeared almost as completely as Claire had.

Almost.

Daniel Reed was waiting at a roadside motel outside El Centro.

When Savannah entered Room 114, he slapped the door shut behind her.

“What did you do?”

She threw her sunglasses on the bed.

“Don’t start.”

“The FBI is at Vale.”

“I know.”

“You said we had forty-eight hours.”

“We did until Claire decided to become Sherlock Holmes.”

Daniel paced.

He looked nothing like the men Savannah usually appeared with publicly.

No tailored suits.

No luxury watch.

Jeans.

Work boots.

Unshaven face.

He had been handsome once.

Now bitterness had sharpened him.

“You told me she was stupid.”

“I said Adrian thought she was stupid.”

“You said she wouldn’t interfere.”

“She wasn’t supposed to inherit until yesterday.”

Daniel laughed.

“And somehow you forgot the date?”

“I didn’t know the trust conditions.”

“That was your job.”

Savannah’s eyes flashed.

“My job was to get close to Adrian.”

“And you got very close.”

She stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“Close enough to play pregnant.”

Savannah’s face hardened.

“Jealousy is pathetic at this point.”

“We are still married.”

“For paperwork.”

“We said we would rebuild after this.”

“No. You said that.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Without me, you’d still be serving drinks at conference hotels.”

Savannah laughed.

“And without me, you’d still be unemployed after Nexora fired you.”

His expression darkened.

There it was.

The real beginning.

Three years earlier, Daniel Reed had worked on Nexora’s corporate strategy team.

Brilliant.

Ambitious.

And convinced the company owed him more than it did.

When he leaked internal projections to a private fund in exchange for money, Nexora discovered it.

They fired him quietly.

No criminal referral.

No public scandal.

Just termination.

Daniel viewed mercy as humiliation.

He wanted revenge.

Then he learned Vale Industries planned to acquire Nexora.

And he built a plan.

Savannah would approach Adrian.

Adrian’s weaknesses were publicly visible if one knew where to look.

Ego.

Women.

Attention.

The need to feel admired.

Savannah engineered their first meeting at a charity gala.

Then a second at a company event.

Then a drink.

Then a hotel room.

Within months, Adrian had placed her on Vale’s payroll.

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“You were supposed to get the files and disappear.”

“I got them.”

“And then you decided you liked the lifestyle.”

Savannah folded her arms.

“Maybe I got tired of living in motels while you planned revenge on people who barely remembered your name.”

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

She yanked free.

“Touch me again and I leave.”

“With what money?”

Savannah smiled.

“More than you know.”

Daniel froze.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“What did you do, Savannah?”

She moved toward the bathroom.

He blocked her.

“The options position was supposed to be split.”

“It is.”

“No. Forty percent of the funds moved this morning.”

Savannah’s face gave her away.

Daniel stared at her.

“You stole from me.”

“I protected myself.”

“You stole from me!”

His fist hit the wall beside her head.

Savannah didn’t flinch.

“You’re losing control.”

“We could go to prison.”

“We won’t.”

“You used Adrian’s computer.”

“With gloves.”

“Cameras.”

“Disabled.”

“Logs.”

“Rerouted.”

“Claire knows about us.”

That finally silenced her.

Daniel studied her face.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Adrian tell her?”

“Adrian didn’t know.”

“Then someone found the marriage certificate.”

Savannah sat on the bed.

For the first time she looked afraid.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“We need to leave.”

“Mexico?”

“No.”

“Canada?”

“No.”

“Where?”

Daniel paused.

“Dubai.”

Savannah laughed.

“You think we’re getting through an airport?”

“We have passports.”

“So does everyone the FBI arrests.”

Daniel opened a duffel bag.

Inside were cash bundles.

Three passports.

Two phones.

Savannah stared.

“You’ve been preparing without telling me.”

He looked at her.

“Seems we both had backup plans.”

Back in Washington, Claire sat inside Charles Whitmore’s private study while Miriam coordinated with federal investigators.

Noah was outside with a nanny.

Claire hated that any of this touched her son’s life.

Miriam entered.

“We found Savannah.”

Claire looked up.

“Where?”

“Not physically.”

Miriam handed her a file.

“Financially.”

Reed Strategic Partners had opened brokerage accounts eighteen months earlier.

The entity received funds from three sources.

A private lender.

Daniel Reed.

And—

Miriam pointed.

Claire read the third name.

She frowned.

“No.”

“I checked twice.”

“This doesn’t make sense.”

“It does if Savannah didn’t create the plan.”

Claire looked again.

The third investor was:

VICTORIA VALE.

Adrian’s mother.

Claire stood so quickly the chair moved backward.

“Victoria funded them?”

“Not directly. Money came through an LLC controlled by a family office.”

“How much?”

“Two million dollars.”

Claire stared.

Victoria had always been cold toward her.

Condescending.

Obsessed with appearances.

But financing Savannah?

That was different.

“Does Adrian know?”

“No.”

“Does Richard?”

“We don’t know.”

Claire walked to the window.

Suddenly memories began rearranging themselves.

Victoria encouraging Adrian to attend events without Claire.

Victoria suggesting Claire should focus on motherhood instead of company affairs.

Victoria introducing Savannah at a charity fundraiser eighteen months earlier.

Claire turned.

“Miriam.”

“Yes?”

“I met Savannah before Adrian did.”

Miriam frowned.

“When?”

“At Victoria’s literacy foundation gala.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Claire remembered Savannah approaching her table.

Friendly.

Charming.

Asking about Adrian.

At the time Claire thought nothing of it.

Now her skin prickled.

“Victoria introduced us.”

Miriam’s eyes narrowed.

“That could be coincidence.”

Claire shook her head.

“Victoria doesn’t believe in coincidences.”

Her phone rang.

Adrian.

Claire stared at the screen.

First call since she left.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

“What?”

Adrian’s voice was rough.

“Did you know Savannah was married?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“For how long?”

“Since this morning.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t care what you believe.”

He exhaled.

“The FBI thinks she stole Nexora data.”

“They have reason to.”

“Did you know she wasn’t pregnant?”

Claire paused.

“We don’t know that yet.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“She won’t send proof.”

“I’m sorry.”

The words surprised both of them.

Adrian went quiet.

Claire meant them.

Not because she wanted him back.

Not because his betrayal hurt less.

But because discovering that someone had weaponized his own arrogance against him was brutal.

Then Claire remembered the financial records.

Her sympathy vanished.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“You need to ask your mother how she knows Savannah.”

Silence.

“What?”

“Ask Victoria why two million dollars from one of her entities ended up connected to Reed Strategic Partners.”

Adrian didn’t speak.

Claire continued.

“And ask her why she introduced Savannah to me eighteen months ago.”

“Claire.”

“I have to go.”

“Wait.”

She stopped.

His voice changed.

For the first time in years, Adrian sounded uncertain.

“Did my mother know about us?”

“I think your mother may be the reason there was an ‘us’ at all.”

Claire ended the call.

In California, Adrian stood alone inside his office.

He stared at his phone.

Then slowly turned toward the family photograph on his shelf.

His mother smiling beside Claire.

Savannah standing in the background at a gala.

Adrian suddenly remembered something.

The night he first slept with Savannah, she had known exactly which hotel bar he would be in.

He had always believed chance brought them together.

Now he wondered who had told her.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Victoria.

Come home. We need to talk before your father finds out.

Adrian stared at the words.

Then another message arrived.

And do not tell Claire anything else. She cannot know why I did it.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Because Claire already knew enough to ask the right question.

May you like

And whatever Victoria Vale had done—

She was terrified of her daughter-in-law discovering the answer.
