Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER-IN-LAW’S SECRET

Victoria Vale was waiting in the garden.

Not the library.

Not Richard’s office.

The garden.

That told Adrian immediately she wanted no recording devices nearby.

He walked toward her.

“You funded Savannah.”

Victoria turned.

“Lower your voice.”

“Did you?”

“Sit down.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“Did you pay Savannah Reed?”

Victoria stared at him for several seconds.

Then she said,

“I paid Daniel.”

Adrian felt his stomach twist.

“Why?”

“I didn’t know about Savannah initially.”

“Initially?”

Victoria sat.

Adrian remained standing.

“Start talking.”

She looked older than she had that morning.

“I met Daniel Reed through an attorney.”

“What attorney?”

“Martin Keene.”

Adrian knew the name.

Former corporate investigator.

Occasional fixer for wealthy families.

Victoria continued.

“I wanted information about Claire.”

Adrian stared.

“You hired someone to investigate my wife?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t trust her.”

Adrian laughed without humor.

“Claire?”

“She was Evelyn Whitmore’s daughter.”

“So?”

“So Evelyn almost destroyed this family once.”

Adrian stopped.

“What?”

Victoria looked toward the roses.

“Your father never told you everything about Vale Industries.”

“I’m figuring that out.”

“Evelyn didn’t merely invest. She controlled Richard.”

“Business?”

Victoria gave him a look.

Adrian understood.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My father had an affair with Claire’s mother?”

“Before you were born.”

Adrian felt dizzy.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

“Did you know?”

“Eventually.”

He sat.

For the first time.

Victoria continued.

“Richard was going to leave me.”

Adrian stared at her.

“But Evelyn ended it.”

“Why?”

“She discovered Richard was using company funds improperly.”

Adrian almost laughed at the irony.

“What happened?”

“She threatened to remove him from leadership unless he corrected it.”

“Sounds familiar.”

Victoria ignored that.

“Richard chose the company. Evelyn withdrew emotionally but kept her investment.”

“And you hated her.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

“I hated what she represented.”

“And Claire?”

“When you brought Claire home from college, I recognized the name immediately.”

Adrian remembered.

Claire had been twenty-three.

Quiet.

Beautiful.

Nervous at dinner.

Victoria had been polite but cold.

“You knew who she was.”

“Yes.”

“Did Dad?”

“The moment he saw her.”

Adrian remembered Richard staring at Claire strangely during that first dinner.

He had assumed it was because she came from money.

Now everything looked different.

“You thought Claire was sent by Evelyn?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Evelyn was dying by then.”

“I still didn’t know.”

“So you investigated her for nine years?”

“Not continuously.”

Adrian stood again.

“When did Daniel enter this?”

“Two years ago.”

Victoria looked ashamed now.

“He claimed Claire was quietly collecting information about company ownership.”

“She was?”

“Yes.”

“Because she owned part of it.”

“I didn’t understand how much.”

Adrian paced.

“Daniel offered to find out?”

“Yes.”

“And Savannah?”

“Daniel told me he had a contact who could get close to you.”

Adrian’s head snapped toward her.

“You knew?”

“Not at first.”

“Knew what?”

“That Savannah would sleep with you.”

His face hardened.

Victoria hurried on.

“I thought she would work near you. Gain access. Learn whether Claire was manipulating you.”

Adrian laughed.

“You paid someone to spy on my wife by seducing me?”

“No.”

“That’s exactly what you did!”

“I never told you to sleep with her!”

“No, Mother. You simply put a beautiful woman in my path, gave her information about me, and paid her husband.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with anger.

“You made your own choices.”

That silenced him.

Because she was right.

Victoria may have arranged the opportunity.

But Adrian had walked into the hotel room himself.

Again and again.

He lowered his voice.

“How much did you pay Daniel?”

“Two million.”

“Why so much?”

“He claimed Claire was preparing a hostile takeover.”

“Was she?”

“No.”

“Then what was she doing?”

Victoria looked away.

“Protecting Noah.”

Adrian stopped.

“What does Noah have to do with the company?”

Victoria said nothing.

“Mom.”

Still nothing.

Adrian moved closer.

“What does my son have to do with Vale Industries?”

Victoria’s voice dropped.

“The original Whitmore agreement contained generational rights.”

“What rights?”

“If Evelyn’s direct descendant married into the Vale family and had a child…”

She stopped.

Adrian’s heart pounded.

“And?”

“That child could inherit voting control from both sides.”

Adrian stared.

“Noah?”

Victoria nodded.

“How much?”

“Eventually?”

“Yes.”

“Potentially controlling interest.”

The garden went silent.

Adrian thought of his four-year-old son.

The boy he had dismissed the night before with:

The boy has his mother.

He suddenly felt sick.

“That’s why Claire left.”

“Partly.”

“Because you were investigating Noah?”

“I was trying to protect the company.”

“You were targeting my family.”

“I was protecting your inheritance.”

Adrian stared at her.

“No.”

“What?”

“You were protecting yours.”

Victoria’s face changed.

Adrian finally saw something clearly.

This had never been about him.

Not fully.

Victoria feared Claire because Claire represented the Whitmore family.

She feared Noah because Noah connected both bloodlines.

And she had used Savannah and Daniel to find leverage.

Instead, Daniel and Savannah had used her.

“How much company information did you give Daniel?”

“None.”

“Think.”

“I gave him shareholder history.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Anything else?”

“Board structure.”

“Mom.”

“And your travel schedule.”

Adrian stared.

Victoria’s voice weakened.

“I didn’t know what he intended.”

Adrian’s phone rang.

Richard.

Victoria immediately stood.

“Don’t tell him.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You’re asking me to lie to Dad?”

“I’m asking you to protect the family.”

He almost laughed.

Then he answered.

“Dad.”

Richard’s voice was cold.

“Where are you?”

“With Mom.”

Silence.

Richard said,

“Put me on speaker.”

Victoria’s face drained.

Adrian did.

Richard continued.

“Victoria, federal investigators are at the house.”

Victoria gripped the back of a chair.

“Why?”

“They have a warrant for records connected to Martin Keene.”

No one spoke.

Then Richard said something that made Adrian turn toward his mother.

“They’re asking about the two million dollars you transferred.”

Victoria whispered,

“Richard—”

“What did you do?”

She sat down slowly.

Adrian watched her.

For the first time in his life, his mother looked afraid.

Richard continued.

“Do not destroy anything. Do not call Keene. Do not contact Daniel Reed.”

Victoria ended the call.

Adrian stared at her.

“Tell me everything.”

“I did.”

“No.”

He moved closer.

“You’re still hiding something.”

Victoria looked toward the mansion.

Then back at her son.

“Daniel wasn’t only investigating Claire.”

Adrian waited.

“He was looking for a document.”

“What document?”

Victoria hesitated.

“The original Whitmore-Vale succession agreement.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever controls it can challenge the current shareholder structure.”

Adrian’s mouth went dry.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who does?”

Victoria whispered,

“Claire.”

Adrian shook his head.

“How?”

“Evelyn left it to her.”

His mother grabbed his hand.

“You have to get it back.”

Adrian pulled away.

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“No.”

“If Claire uses that document—”

“What?”

“She could remove every Vale family member from operational control.”

He stared at her.

“Including me?”

“Yes.”

“And Dad?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked toward the house he grew up believing represented his family’s success.

Then he finally understood.

Claire had not simply inherited forty-six million dollars.

She might possess the legal key to the entire Vale empire.

And while Adrian had spent years treating her like a dependent housewife—

Claire had been living inside a company that her own mother’s money had helped create.
