Chapter 3 - THE BOARDROOM COUP

At 8:16 that morning, every senior executive inside Vale Industries knew something was wrong.

Nobody knew exactly what.

Adrian walked through the lobby without acknowledging anyone.

Savannah stood near the elevators wearing oversized sunglasses.

He almost kept walking.

Then anger won.

“What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk.”

“Not now.”

“You’re not answering.”

“I have a board meeting.”

Savannah grabbed his wrist.

“Adrian.”

He looked down at her hand.

She released him.

“Is Claire doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“My apartment.”

“Claire has nothing to do with your apartment.”

“Lawyers said—”

“I’ll handle it.”

Savannah lowered her voice.

“What about us?”

Adrian stared at her.

The question that had been burning through him since the previous night came out flat.

“Are you pregnant?”

Savannah froze.

Only for half a second.

But Adrian saw it.

“Of course.”

“Show me.”

“What?”

“Show me proof.”

Her face hardened.

“I cannot believe you’re asking me that.”

“I pay for a doctor.”

“Yes.”

“What’s his name?”

“You know his name.”

“Say it.”

“Adrian.”

“Say his name.”

People were watching.

Savannah stepped closer.

“Not here.”

He pulled away.

“That’s what I thought.”

He entered the private elevator.

Savannah tried to follow.

Security blocked her.

“Mr. Vale?”

Adrian didn’t look back.

“Don’t let her upstairs.”

The doors closed.

On the forty-second floor, Ethan waited.

He looked exhausted.

Adrian walked past him.

“Who’s attending?”

“Everyone.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Claire?”

“Remote.”

Adrian stopped.

“She’s joining?”

“Yes.”

He laughed bitterly.

“From Washington.”

Ethan nodded.

“Is Charles Whitmore with her?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian looked at his assistant.

“You knew more about Claire’s finances than I did.”

Ethan chose his words carefully.

“I knew what company records showed.”

“You helped her.”

“No.”

“You knew she bought shares.”

“After the transaction.”

“You knew she was leaving.”

“Hours before you did.”

“And you didn’t call me.”

Ethan met his gaze.

“She asked me not to.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You work for me.”

“I work for Vale Industries.”

That sentence landed harder than Ethan intended.

Adrian’s expression became dangerous.

“Get inside.”

The boardroom contained twelve people.

Richard Vale sat near the center.

Beside him was company counsel.

Two independent directors whispered together.

Adrian took his usual chair.

A large screen activated.

Claire appeared.

White blouse.

Hair pulled back.

No visible anger.

That made Adrian hate the situation even more.

He had expected tears eventually.

A pleading phone call.

Perhaps anger.

Not this.

Claire looked like she belonged at the table.

The board secretary began.

“This emergency meeting has been called pursuant to Section—”

Adrian interrupted.

“Before we start, I want it recorded that one shareholder has a personal conflict of interest.”

Claire spoke calmly.

“You mean your wife?”

“Estranged wife.”

“Technically not yet.”

One director coughed to hide a smile.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“This is retaliation.”

Claire replied,

“Then the investigation should clear you.”

“What investigation?”

Company counsel opened a folder.

“A special committee has been proposed to investigate executive misuse of company assets, undisclosed conflicts, potential securities exposure, and compliance violations.”

Adrian leaned back.

“This is absurd.”

Richard finally spoke.

“Is it?”

Adrian looked at his father.

“Don’t.”

Richard folded his hands.

“I warned you about the company accounts.”

“This is about Savannah?”

“No,” Claire said. “Savannah is only the easiest part to understand.”

Adrian turned toward the screen.

“What does that mean?”

Claire looked directly at him.

“Did you give Savannah access to your office?”

His expression changed.

“How do you know that?”

“Answer the question.”

“You’re not my attorney.”

“No. I’m a shareholder.”

Silence.

Claire continued.

“Did she have access to your computer?”

Adrian looked toward Ethan.

Ethan looked down.

“Yes.”

The independent directors exchanged looks.

Claire’s next question was quieter.

“Did you know confidential acquisition documents were downloaded while she was there?”

Adrian froze.

“What documents?”

Company counsel intervened.

“We have confirmed a data transfer.”

Adrian sat forward.

“To whom?”

“Unknown.”

“What acquisition?”

Then he understood.

“Nexora.”

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked around.

“The Nexora merger?”

Richard’s voice was grim.

“Yes.”

Adrian felt the room tilt.

The Nexora transaction was the biggest strategic move of his career.

Very few people knew the offer structure.

If it leaked, competitors could interfere.

Regulators could ask questions.

The deal could collapse.

Adrian looked at Claire.

“You think Savannah stole it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why are we sitting here?”

“Because we know your credentials were involved.”

“I didn’t download anything.”

Claire nodded.

“I believe you.”

Adrian stared.

He hadn’t expected that.

“Then stop this.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your irresponsibility created the vulnerability.”

Adrian pushed his chair backward.

“My marriage is not company business.”

“It became company business when you put your mistress on payroll.”

Murmurs around the table.

Adrian’s face reddened.

“That consulting role was legitimate.”

Ethan’s expression said otherwise.

Claire continued.

“Her apartment was leased through Vale Coastal Development.”

Adrian said nothing.

“Her vehicle was company-owned.”

Silence.

“Your trips to meet her were billed as investor relations.”

“Enough.”

“And at least seventy-three thousand dollars in gifts were categorized as client entertainment.”

“Enough!”

Adrian’s palm struck the table.

The room went silent.

Claire didn’t blink.

“That,” she said quietly, “is how you spoke to me at home.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

Claire continued.

“But this isn’t home.”

One of the independent directors, Margaret Shaw, spoke.

“I support forming the special committee.”

Another raised his hand.

“So do I.”

Then another.

Adrian looked toward Richard.

“Dad.”

Richard raised his hand.

Adrian’s face went still.

The board secretary counted.

Motion passed.

Company counsel continued.

“Pending investigation, the committee also recommends temporary restrictions on Mr. Vale’s access to certain confidential systems.”

“What?”

“Standard precaution.”

“I’m CEO.”

“For now,” Richard said.

Adrian turned.

Richard’s eyes were tired, not triumphant.

That made it worse.

Adrian looked back at Claire.

“This is what you wanted.”

“No.”

“You’ve been waiting to embarrass me.”

Claire’s expression changed for the first time.

Something almost like sadness.

“I spent years trying to prevent you from embarrassing yourself.”

Adrian stopped.

Claire continued.

“You wouldn’t listen.”

Before he could answer, the boardroom doors opened.

Two men from corporate security entered.

Behind them came a woman in a dark suit.

She showed identification.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Nobody moved.

A second agent entered.

“We need to speak with Mr. Adrian Vale regarding suspected theft of confidential corporate information connected to market manipulation.”

Adrian stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

The agent remained calm.

“You are not under arrest.”

“Then leave.”

“We also need access to the computer assigned to your executive office.”

Company counsel immediately rose.

“Let’s handle this properly.”

Adrian pointed toward the screen.

“This is her.”

Claire’s eyes widened slightly.

The agent glanced toward the monitor.

“Mrs. Vale?”

“Yes?”

“We may need to speak with you as well.”

Claire nodded.

“Of course.”

Adrian laughed.

“You see? She’s involved.”

The agent looked at him.

“Actually, Mr. Vale, Mrs. Vale’s attorney contacted regulators this morning after discovering a possible breach.”

Adrian went silent.

Claire hadn’t created the investigation.

She had reported the danger.

That distinction suddenly mattered.

Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

His face changed.

“Sir.”

Adrian snapped, “What?”

Ethan turned his screen around.

Breaking financial news.

NEXORA ACQUISITION DETAILS LEAKED — RIVAL BID EXPECTED

Adrian stared.

The confidential deal was public.

His biggest transaction was collapsing in real time.

Then another alert appeared.

A company had purchased an enormous options position shortly before the leak.

The buyer was hidden behind a Nevada entity.

Claire leaned closer to her camera.

“Can you enlarge the name?”

Ethan did.

The shell company was called:

REED STRATEGIC PARTNERS.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Savannah Reed.

The FBI agent looked toward him.

“Mr. Vale.”

Adrian slowly sat back down.

“You said Savannah Reed was your consultant?”

Adrian whispered,

“Yes.”

“Your romantic partner?”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Do you know Daniel Reed?”

Adrian looked up.

“Who?”

On the screen, Claire’s face changed.

The agent replied,

“Savannah Reed’s husband.”

Adrian stared.

“She isn’t married.”

“Yes, she is.”

“No.”

“She has been married for seven years.”

Adrian’s entire body went rigid.

Around him, nobody spoke.

Then the agent delivered the final blow.

“Daniel Reed is also a former senior analyst at Nexora.”

May you like

And for the first time, Adrian understood that while he had believed he was cheating on Claire with Savannah—

Savannah might have been using him from the beginning.
