Chapter 8 - THE ESCAPE

Richard disappeared before police could arrest him.
His house was empty.
His office had been cleared.
His bank accounts were drained.
Then something happened that terrified everyone.
The hospital's security system went offline.
For twelve minutes.
Exactly twelve minutes.
Detective Morris rushed into my room.
“Get ready.”
“For what?”
“We're moving you.”
“Why?”
“Because someone inside the hospital is helping Richard.”
Nurses moved me through a private corridor.
My baby monitor was attached to the portable equipment.
We entered an underground parking garage.
Then the lights went out.
My heart raced.
A car door slammed somewhere nearby.
Detective Morris drew her weapon.
“Stay behind me.”
Footsteps approached.
A man appeared.
I recognized him immediately.
Richard Hale.
He smiled.
“You should have died in that garage.”
Detective Morris raised her weapon.
“Don't move.”
Richard laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
He looked directly at me.
“Your husband wasn't trying to steal your money.”
I swallowed.
“What, then?”
Richard smiled.
“He was trying to find something your father hid.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
Richard's expression changed.
“The original ledger.”
Before he could say more, police officers rushed into the garage.
Richard ran.
A chase began.
Seconds later, he was tackled beside the elevator.

As officers handcuffed him, he shouted one final sentence.
“You'll wish I had killed you!”
