Chapter 6 - THE THIRD PERSON

That night, Detective Morris visited me privately.
“We found another phone.”
“Whose?”
“David's.”
“I thought police had his phone.”
“This one was hidden.”
She showed me the evidence photograph.
The phone had been discovered inside the wall behind our bedroom closet.
“There are messages on it.”
“From Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
She hesitated.
“Your father.”
I stared at her.
“That doesn't make sense.”
The messages were dated six years ago.
My father's number.
But my father had been dead.
Someone had been using his phone after his death.
The messages were short.
David knows about the account.
Do not trust him.
If he discovers the documents, we're finished.
Then one final message:
There is another person involved.
I looked at Detective Morris.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
“But we have a name.”
She handed me a photograph.
The man was in his fifties.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
Standing beside David at a charity event.
I recognized him.
“That's Richard Hale.”
My father had once mentioned him.
“He was my father's business partner.”
Detective Morris nodded.
“Richard Hale owns the company that received nearly half a million dollars from David.”
I felt sick.

The conspiracy had just become bigger.
And somewhere outside the hospital, Richard Hale knew that I was alive.
