Chapter 12 - THE DEAL

David agreed to cooperate.

His attorney contacted the prosecutor.

In exchange for a reduced sentence, he would testify against Richard.

I refused to meet him.

But David requested one thing.

He wanted to speak to me.

I eventually agreed.

A glass barrier separated us.

He looked smaller.

Older.

Almost pathetic.

“I loved you,” he said.

I laughed bitterly.

“No, you didn't.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I did once.”

“When?”

“Before everything.”

I stared at him.

“You married me because of my father's money.”

“Yes.”

“You planned my father's death.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill our baby.”

He couldn't answer.

I waited.

Finally he whispered:

“Yes.”

I felt nothing.

No rage.

No tears.

Only emptiness.

Then he said:

“Your mother-in-law wasn't the one who ordered it.”

I stared at him.

“Who did?”

“Richard.”

David leaned toward the glass.

“He told me if you survived, he'd kill me.”

I stood.

“Then why are you still alive?”

“Because I have something he wants.”

“What?”

David smiled sadly.

“The location of the money your father hid.”

I walked away.

For the first time, I understood.

David wasn't trying to save me.

He was trying to save himself.
