Chapter 11 - THE OLD HOUSE
Police searched the old house.
Behind a wall in my childhood bedroom, they found a metal safe.
Inside was the evidence my father had hidden.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
And a handwritten ledger documenting every payment Richard had made.
But there was one final item.
A video cassette.
Detective Morris found a player.
My father's face appeared on the screen.
I broke down immediately.
“Claire,” he said.
His voice was calm.
“If you're watching this, something happened to me.”
He explained everything.
Richard had recruited David.
David had approached me because of my father's assets.
My marriage had never been an accident.
David had deliberately entered my life.
Every romantic moment.
Every promise.
Every family dinner.
It had all been part of the plan.
I had never been loved.
I had been selected.
My knees weakened.
Then my father said something that destroyed me.
“But there is one thing Richard doesn't know.”
He leaned closer to the camera.
“David eventually betrayed him.”
The video ended.
Detective Morris looked at me.
“Why would David betray Richard?”
I didn't know.
Then Daniel Reed found the answer.
“Because David stole something.”
“What?”
“Millions.”
Suddenly everything made sense.
David hadn't wanted me dead simply because of the insurance.
