Part 9: The Final Balance

The final court hearing was held in a small, sterile chamber downtown.
It was far away from the media cameras that had followed the scandal since graduation day.
My father and brother sat at the defense table in matching orange jumpsuits.
Their arrogant posture was completely erased by the weight of the federal indictments.
The judge reviewed the unredacted forensic summaries for less than five minutes.
She struck the heavy wooden block with her gavel, the sound echoing through the room.
"Based on the verified digital certificate fraud and the systematic theft of the educational reserves," Judge Thornton announced.
"The court orders an immediate dissolution of all Montgomery corporate entities."
"The remaining capital assets will be permanently transferred to a restricted trust fund."
"Under the sole management of Mia Montgomery."
I stood up from my seat, looking at the two men who had spent my entire life telling me I was a failure.
They had told the world I was just a dramatic girl who didn't understand the real world.
They couldn't look me in the eye.
Their gaze remained fixed on the scarred wooden table as the bailiffs moved in to escort them away.
I walked out of the courthouse steps alone, the bright afternoon sun finally clearing the grey winter clouds.
The old routine was torn to shreds.
The liars were contained in a maximum-security compliance audit.
And our world was safe.
I looked at the gold embossed letters on my diploma folder one last time.
I knew my mother's advice and my own hard work had built something they could never touch.
The system was secure.

The asset lines were clear.
And the future was finally, beautifully, and permanently mine.
