Part 2: The Trust Dissolution

Part 2: The Trust Dissolution

The murmurs in the crowd grew into a dazed wave of frantic whispering.

My father took two aggressive steps toward the stage, but two university security guards immediately intercepted him, blocking his path with hands resting firmly on their belts.

"Get away from that microphone, you ungrateful little liar!" my mother shrieked, her expensive silk scarf fluttering as she tried to bypass the guards.

I didn't look at her; I looked down at the documents resting on the podium.

"Four years ago, my grandfather established an educational trust fund containing two hundred and forty thousand dollars," I stated, my voice echoing off the brick university walls. "The fund was intended exclusively for my education and living expenses."

The university president stood just behind me, his jaw dropped, completely unsure whether to cut the feed or let me finish.

"But my parents told the family I failed my freshman year," I continued. "They told our relatives I dropped out because of emotional instability, using that lie to justify why I was no longer living at home."

I flipped to the second page of the audit.

"In reality, I was working two jobs while maintaining a full honors scholarship that covered my entire tuition," I said, a single tear finally sliding down my bruised cheek. "Because the day after my grandfather passed away, my father used a forged power of attorney to drain the entire trust fund."

I pointed directly at my smirking brother, Ethan.

"They didn't use the money to pay for school," I whispered into the mic. "They used it to pay off the gambling debts of their golden child, and to buy the sports car he crashed into a concrete barrier last summer."
