Part 5: The Corporate Retaliation

The fallout from the commencement stage broadcast did not settle within the university perimeter.
By 8:00 a.m. the following Monday, the administrative board of Montgomery & Sons Capital had convened an emergency proxy session.
They met in their downtown high-rise, behind locked glass doors.
I stood in the glass-fronted lobby, watching the morning traffic crawl along the Chicago streets below.
My bound ledger was tucked securely under my arm.
The corporate security guards stood rigidly by the elevator turnstiles.
Their expressions were completely unreadable as they glanced at the bruise on my face.
My phone vibrated sharply against my palm.
The screen displayed an unlisted communication from Marcus Bell.
He was the senior compliance attorney my late grandfather had trusted before his passing.
"Mia," Marcus’s voice came through the encrypted line, flat and precise.
It was entirely stripped of any familial pretense.
"Your brother’s defense team is already attempting to execute a secondary asset restructuring."
"They are targeting the northern logistics lines."
"They filed an automated emergency petition at 6:00 a.m. today."
"They want to declare your accounting audit an illegal disclosure of proprietary data."
"They are trying to freeze your grandfather's master trust before the federal grand jury can issue the formal asset-seizure warrants."
I didn't let my breathing falter.
My fingers simply tightened around the leather folder as the elevator doors chimed open.
My family had spent four years believing that my quietness in the corner office was a sign of total submission.
They thought I was just a useful tool for their corporate layout.
They completely forgot that before I walked across that graduation stage with an honors degree, I had spent eighteen months preparing.
I had cataloged every single internal IP address they used to mask their massive debt.
"Let them file the petition, Marcus," I said.
My voice dropped into an icy whisper as I stepped into the empty elevator cabin.
"The digital certificates they used to access the secondary escrow line were cloned from my private student portal last winter."

"And that constitutes a direct violation of the federal computer fraud and abuse registry."
The doors slid shut, cutting off the noise of the lobby.
