Part 4: The True Degree

By noon, the graduation stage was empty, but the campus was still buzzing with the aftermath of the broadcast.

The video of my speech had already clocked millions of views online, the title The Honors Audit trending across every major news platform in the state.

I sat on a stone bench near the university library, my navy blue gown unzipped, holding a cup of cold coffee my friend Chloe had brought me.

The bruise on my cheekbone was throbbing, but the suffocating weight I had carried for four years was entirely gone.

Detective Miller walked over, holding a secure manila folder under his arm. He gave me a soft, respectful smile.

"Your father and brother are currently being processed at the county jail, Miss Montgomery," Miller said. "The forgery charges are solid, and because the trust fund was cross-state, the feds are looking into wire fraud as well."

"And my mother?" I asked quietly.

"She’s being questioned as an accessory," the detective replied. "She signed the tax indemnity waivers claiming the trust money was a gift. She’s losing the house, Mia."

I looked down at my diploma folder, running my fingers over the gold embossed letters of my name.

My parents had spent my entire life trying to turn my achievements into an overreaction, telling the world I was a dramatic failure just to hide their own financial rot.

They had slammed my cap to the ground to keep me quiet.

But they had forgotten that a woman with an honors degree in accounting knows exactly how to track a thief through the dark.

"Thank you, Detective," I said, standing up and shaking his hand.

I walked out of the campus gates alone, the bright June afternoon sun finally warming my face.

The family name was ruined, the inheritance was gone, and the path ahead was completely uncharted.

But as I looked at the degree in my hand, I knew the ledger was finally balanced.
