Part 6: The Forensic Discovery

The central conference room on the forty-second floor was suffocatingly cold.
I stepped through the double mahogany doors without knocking.
Three senior board members sat around the long glass table.
Their faces turned pale under the stark fluorescent fixtures as they reviewed the document stacks.
My mother, Beatrice Montgomery, sat in the corner armchair.
Her pearl necklace clinked against her designer jacket as her hands trembled violently.
"Mia, look at what you’ve done to this family's nameplate," she hissed.
Her voice rose to a frantic pitch that echoed off the high glass windows.
"Your father's business partners are pulling their regional grants before the market even opens for the day!"
She looked at me like I was the criminal.
"The partners aren't pulling the grants because of my speech, Mother," I said.
I walked to the table and slid a white encrypted data drive across the glass surface.
"They are pulling the grants because of what is inside that drive."
"The forensic screen I completed at 2:00 a.m. today proved the company has been a mathematical lie since 2024."
Naomi Pierce, our lead systems analyst, stepped up to the main projection display on the wall.
She pressed a single button on her tablet.
The grand monitors lit up instantly.
They illuminated forty pages of unredacted transaction summaries for the entire board to see.
It wasn't a record of standard operational losses.
It wasn't a regular market decline.
It was a live tracking stream showing my brother routing my grandfather's educational trust funds directly to an offshore shell firm.
The firm was located in Panama.
The account carried my mother’s maiden nameplate.
It was designed to shield her private real estate defaults before the bank could foreclose on the family mansion.
"You signed the tax indemnity waivers claiming the tuition money was a personal gift, Beatrice," I stated flatly.

I looked directly into her widening eyes.
"But the digital signature key you used was lifted from my late grandfather’s medical portal while he was sedated in the hospital wing."
