Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR THE TWINS
The security alarm sounded at 2:14 a.m.
Rachel woke to glass breaking downstairs.
She ran toward the girls' room.
Daniel was already there.
“Get behind me.”
Betty was crying.
Maria clung to Rachel.
Footsteps approached.
Then the lights came on.
Security officers flooded the hallway.
But one guard was missing.
Daniel understood immediately.
“Inside.”
They moved into a safe room.
Rachel held both girls.
Daniel locked the door.
A voice came through the intercom.
Richard.
“Daniel.”
Daniel stared at the speaker.
“You've lost.”
Richard laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“What do you want?”
“The girls.”
“You're not getting them.”
“Then I'll take the company.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Richard continued.
“Your father built the trust to protect the family.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“You manipulated him.”
“No.”
Richard's voice became colder.
“Your father manipulated everyone.”
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“He ordered your mother's death.”
Rachel stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at her.
“That's a lie.”
“Ask Charles Sanders.”
Richard laughed.
“He knows.”
The line went dead.
Daniel turned to Rachel.
“We're leaving.”
“Where?”
“My father's old estate.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No more running.”
