Chapter 15 - EIGHT YEARS LATER

The Grand Sterling Estate looked different.

Not because it had changed.

Because Rachel had.

Eight years earlier, she had stood at the back of a church believing she was watching the end of her life.

Now she stood in the same place.

But this time, she was walking toward the man she had once run from.

Betty was seventeen.

Maria was seventeen.

Both wore white dresses.

Neither was a flower girl anymore.

They were bridesmaids.

Daniel stood at the altar.

Older.

Grayer.

Softer.

Still impossibly wealthy.

But no longer obsessed with proving himself.

Rachel reached the altar.

Daniel looked at her.

“You came back.”

She smiled.

“I never really left.”

The officiant smiled.

“Rachel, do you take Daniel?”

She looked at him.

“I do.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“I do.”

Betty wiped her eyes.

Maria whispered:

“Finally.”

Everyone laughed.

After the ceremony, Daniel pulled Rachel aside.

“There's something I need to give you.”

“What?”

He handed her a small envelope.

Inside was the photograph from eight years ago.

The one of them laughing on the balcony.

Rachel smiled.

“You kept it?”

“Every day.”

She looked at the back.

Daniel had written something.

The life I should have chosen the first time.

Rachel looked up.

“You know what I regret?”

“What?”

“That I thought leaving was the only way to protect them.”

Daniel touched her cheek.

“You were protecting them.”

“I could have trusted you.”

“You had no reason to.”

She smiled.

“We wasted eight years.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the garden.

Betty and Maria were dancing beneath the lights.

“We didn't waste them.”

Rachel looked at him.

“We survived them.”

Daniel kissed her forehead.

Then Maria shouted from across the garden.

“Mom! Dad! Come dance!”

Rachel laughed.

Daniel took her hand.

They walked toward their daughters.

But before they reached them, Rachel's phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She stopped.

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?”

Rachel opened the message.

There was only one sentence.

You thought Richard Vale was the end. He wasn't.

Attached was a photograph.

Daniel looked at it.

His face changed.

It showed a man standing outside the hospital the night the twins were born.

Rachel stared.

“Who is that?”

Daniel zoomed in.

The man's face became clear.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“That…”

“What?”

“He's my father's younger brother.”

Rachel's eyes widened.

“Your uncle?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He died twenty years ago.”

Another message appeared.

HE DIDN'T.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

The music continued behind them.

Their daughters laughed.

The wedding lights glowed.

Everything seemed perfect.

But Daniel's expression told her the truth.

Their story was not over.

Not even close.

Because eight years ago, Rachel had run from a billionaire.

She thought she was running from Daniel Harden.

She had been running from his family.

And now the family secret that destroyed them once had finally come back for their daughters.

Daniel took Rachel's hand.

This time, he didn't let go.

“Whatever happens next,” he whispered, “we face it together.”

Rachel looked toward Betty and Maria.

Then she smiled.

“Together.”

Behind them, the music suddenly stopped.

Every light in the garden went dark.

And somewhere beyond the estate gates, a man's voice whispered:

“Hello, Daniel.”

May you like

The billionaire groom turned toward the darkness.

And for the first time since he had discovered his daughters, Daniel Harden looked afraid.
