Chapter 10 - The Woman Behind the Ring

Vanessa accepted a plea agreement months later.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The fraudulent impersonation.
The diverted funds.
The attempt to manipulate the competency proceedings.
Trevor's recordings.
She tried blaming Marcus until the end.
Marcus accepted responsibility for his role too.
His legal outcome was painful but less severe because he cooperated and helped recover assets.
I attended the sentencing.
Vanessa looked at me across the courtroom.
“You ruined my life,” she whispered afterward.
I almost answered.
Then I realized there was nothing to say.
I hadn't forged anything.
I hadn't stolen anything.
I hadn't forced anyone to lie.
Consequences weren't revenge.
Outside, Lily took my arm.
“Ready?”
I looked up at the bright Cleveland sky.
My vision wasn't perfect.
Dr. Miles said it probably never would be.
But I could see Lily's face clearly.
That was enough.
“Ready.”
Then Marcus approached us.
He stopped several feet away.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I wanted to tell you something.”
I waited.
“I made my first restitution payment today.”
No excuses.
No request for praise.
Just a fact.
“Good,” I said.
He nodded.
Then walked away.
Lily squeezed my hand.
“He's changing.”
“Maybe.”
May you like
“You don't believe him?”
“I believe change takes longer than an apology.”
